Q:

My latest addition – MkIII Ruger Hunter

Cabelas had a hell of a deal for Cabelas Club members, and I had to take advantage of it.
$100.00 off any purchase of $500.00 or more charged to their credit card. (pro-rated for lesser purchases)

$549.00 – $100.00 = $449.00. It came home with me today!!!! 🙂 :8:
I even had to put it on layaway, cause I forgot to renew my Permit to Purchase!!! :banghead: Expired just 2 weeks ago!!! AAARGGHHH! The deal ended on 4-26-11, so I made the layway purchase, put $501.00 down and got the $100.00 price reduction!! The Permit takes 5 days + mailing time, + maybe 1 or so days or a weekend to process, so I was almost screwed, until I asked about layway and they said to come on in and it would be no problem as the permit, etc. is not required until FINAL payment of the layway, then the purchase is considered complete, and paperwork, etc. is then required. So I could have paid all but $1.00 of the price in layaway to take advantage of the discount, and be within the firearms laws as well.

It has much nicer figured wood on it than the one I tried in the display case or that I had seen on others I have looked at the last year or more.
I really like the way it feels and this thing is built to last generations.

Can’t wait to go out and give it a tryout.
Sucks that it may rain all damn weekend.. 😥 😥 .. but we’ll see…. 🙂 🙂

I know that several of you have this same gun, and I had been looking at the Beretta NEOS cause it is cheaper, and the Browning Buckmarks with the nicer grips, etc. It was reading what you all said about the Ruger that made me decide to wait for a great deal on the MKIII and it finally came about!!!! Last year they had the same deal, but the funds were not there for it so I had to pass…. Glad I did in the long run, cause this one is a beauty!!!!!

(WTF??? some little swirly things somehow were attracted to the serial number on the picture and obscured it!!!) 😆

I also got this nice little clip loading aid, $3.49 and worth every bit. It holds the loading button down to the bottom so all you have to do is drop the cartridges in. It is designed for the MKI and MKII, so due to the extra bump on the side of the MKIII clip (for safety interlock, etc) I will have to make a small notch on the inside corner of the device so it will slide up and down the clip freely. Easy enough to do with a rat-tail file or side of a drill bit I would think.

I’ll post some pics of the mods done and why it is needed, etc.
They did not have one marked for MKIIIs and I did not notice the issue till i tried it and could not get it back off!!! Coaxed it off, the found out that I could have just disconnected the bottom of the clip and slid it and the whole internal works right out of the clip!!! ( pays to read ALL of the instructions…) 😆 😆

Yes, Crow, your recommendation was one of those that made me decide to hold out for the Ruger over the Buckmark.
As is, I ended up getting it for the same price as the Buckmark was selling for when I was trying to decide what to get!!
Ruger just seemed a bit high at the time, $599 at Gander Mountain!!! YIKES!. Cabelas was cheaper at $549 and the $100 off sealed the deal. Also looked at the Competition model with the 6.75 inch slab sided barrell, but decided the fiber front would work better for my tired old eyes and it looks great too. 😆 Now I am shopping/studying scope options for it.

Will be handing this down to the Grandkid some day. Not so sure the Buckmark would stand up quite as long and certainly not the Beretta Neos.

Thanks to all for the tips, etc.

Nice gun Rev I have same one and believe i reccomended also to you
I love it and If ya want to shoot quieter and accurate use CCI CBlongs and for more quiet us CB caps the longs ya have to cycle bolt with hand but they stack in the mag fine for cb caps ya have to single load them but they are also very accurate

A little like Browning using Briley chokes for all aftermarket sales (stainless)… Browning’s OEM (black) chokes are god awful.

TAG sold me on this one too as I mentioned earlier.

By the way, during my product registration entries for Ruger, they asked about what (gun related) shows you watched, magazines you read, and… what websites you visited the most. They had many to pick from, and you could enter “Others” as well. I of course entered http://WWW.Talonairgun.com… 😆

FYI – on the Ruger website, they have grips available among other accessories. Interesting to note that Hogue is their supplier for all of their grips and they look just like the ones on the guns, so now we know who they get them from on the production guns.

Revwarnut

I’ve noticed the same… I’ve put 300 rounds through it since the last clean and just a dry patch is all that’s needed to keep the bore tidy. I don’t over oil it as that collects the sh*t. If I can touch the moving parts and feel a film then I leave it alone 🙂 Otherwise just a drop or two of remoil (non aerosol) on the bolt.

Great gun… and I have TAG to thank for advising me a few months back.

Congrats Rev! 😀 You are going to love that pistol. I have a MKII 5 1/4″ target barrelled version that I have shot the piss out of. I once put 2000 rounds through it wothout cleaning. It didn’t miss a beat and retained its accuracy. I cleaned it at the 2000 round mark as there was a wind storm that day the covered everything with fine sand. It is my favorite rimfire pistol.

Good Luck and enjoy!!!

I put Volquartzen grips on my MkII. Makes scoped shooting a lot easier.

Mines the 10″ bull barrel version.

Dohhhhh!! you are right, read that too fast I guess. LOL!

The firing pin locking pin is inside the bolt and is different than the hammer pin which is in the frame.

You are correct that removing the firing pin locking pin will damage the gun but they use a roll pin on the mkIII and it won’t come out without some effort. And only after you field strip the gun.

The Houge grips are good and the do have reinforced plastic under the rubber.

Happy shooting!!!

Thanks for the tips, I didn’t think of the Boresnake yet, great idea and I got a box of the Federal “blue box” of 525 Champion hollowpoints, but will try those yellow jackets too and the 510’s as well. I have small variety of some others to run through her too.

I almost got that same Uncle Mike’s holster, but I saw one for another type/size that was camouflage, so I am holding out until I find one in size 14 or I may think about getting a bandoleer type holster from them. They come in scoped and unscoped types. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002IODLW/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002PEFXK6&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0DK5RQYPJFFQSBPG8GN1

They must have changed their scope rail as the one I have will mount with the sights I have on it, and they are dual use. Weaver and 3/8 in one, but I will use Weaver mounts I am sure, as they are easier to find and a wider variety available.

Those Aquilas are interesting, I saw those, but did not realize what they were. I did not think there was enough power in a .22 to push anything down the barrel with just the primer, but maybe they put a little extra in it.

I am debating what kind of scope to use. Standard or a red-dot scope. I have a Trophy red-dot scope that I got for a bargain price a while back to use on my airpistols. Not sure if it will be good enough for use on the pistol, but I will try it out.

May not change the grips, as I like the way it looks with these on it.
Perhaps for hunting, I may consider swapping to keep them in nice shape, but time will tell as I try it out, they seem pretty good as is so far.

For those of you who have or want one of these pistols, here is a review on the grips that brings up a CRITICAL POINT about grips with this gun.

quote :

After trying the Pachmayr grips on my Mark III for 9 months, I pitched them in the trash and purchased these Hogue grips instead. The Pachmayr cracked right at the hammer pin, which caused me some trouble when that pin backed out slightly. These Hogue grips were obviously designed by someone who actually knows the Mark series pistols. They have reinforcement where the cross pins are located on the frame, and they also fit nicely around the bolt stop. Only a very slight modification was necessary for the Mark III magazine release. Great fit…great quality…I should have purchased these the first time around

The critical point is about the Hammer Pin, the grips hold it in place.

(edit, the original posting was incorrect, see ssshooter’s response below and the edits are the correction)
If it indeed does come out, and if you EVER fire the gun with the (edit – firing pin locking pin) pin missing, the firing pin will strike the breech of the barrel and will damage it beyond repair. (per the manual) You can dry-fire this gun with the (edit – firing pin locking pin) pin in place.

Oh, and grab a 22 bore snake to clean the barrel.

I have the same gun – it’s great – you’re won’t be able to put it down…. here are some customizations I’ve made. All chrony numbers are for the same barrel length as yours…

* Break in the springs with 100 Remington Yellow Jacket HP bullets. They group well at 50 yards and are available at Walmart.

* Federal 510 Champion, groups great and doesn’t misfire or misfeed, chrony at 1100fps with a SD of 25fps… http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=140995

* You can only load three rounds in the mag but for a sedate 18 ft/lbs and a chrony of 625ft/s http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=295321

* Same deal as above but 7 ft/lbs and 400 ft/s but don’t need hearing protection in a garage… http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=946854

* Holster http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=367823

* Wrap around rubber target grip, right hand: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=805249 and a couple extra screws http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=628426

* Traditional front and rear sight http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=740934 and http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=794626 Don’t forget the front sight is locked with red loctite, warm it up a little before removing it.

* Weaver rail that doesn’t need your rear sight to be removed http://www.jackweigand.com/rm2fd.html (red loctite again)

I’ve got an UltraDot sight on order, I’ll post to the forum once it’s installed and I’ve put some rounds down range.
