Q:

My new AF pump kicked the bucket, and so did a turkey

Had an interesting chain of events happen to me yesterday…

My roommate (Gimpy here on the forum) and I decided to go to my parents house yesterday for a little shooting. That in and of itself was nothing outside or the ordinary. Nor was me parking, and starting to pump up my tank like some crazy cracked out yahoo. Just about the time that I got the tank to about 2000psi my parents new puppy distracted me just long enough to let go of the pump, and with my amazing luck sheered the brass fitting that connects the tank to the pump clean off.

Go figure, I have had the gun and the tank just shy of 10 days and I already managed to bust the thing. And of course as soon as it broke, all I could think about was the guy at Airhog telling me that most people get a scuba set up about a month after getting their first pcp, and if they don’t they are always ordering broken parts. I agreed with him and told him that I was sure I too would become just like the rest, I just thought it would take me more than 9 days.

Being slightly depressed we went inside and drank a beer and played with the dog. However the fever returned and we decided to go outside and shoot for awhile since it would be the last time I would have a chance for a week or so given my new predicament.

Figured this was as good of an excuse as any to get rid of my 15.8gr Diabolo’s that ended up being way too light to shoot out of my condor. So we dialed the gun down to around 2 (or lower) to make them just barely go sub sonic, and zeroed my scope to their POI. After maybe twenty shots or so (which should have put me around 1600-1800psi) my dad pulled up and mentioned that he saw four giant wild turkey’s at the top of out property. Being that my roommate, myself, and my dad all have been idly stalking those birds for months now, I handed my roommate a few more pellets and said “have fun.” After the shocked look that I would let him shoot a turkey with my gun, we quickly bounded off in the direction my dad had indicated.

I shot at the target with my old springer for a few more minutes before my curiosity got the best of me and I too went in the direction of the birds. I got up my road to where I thought they would be just in time to hear my gun of off and see a turkey drop like a sack of potatoes.

To me the scary part is that my gun dropped a turkey with my lightest pellet, at it’s lowest setting, at 40 yards. I can only dream of how it might have turned out if it was on a full tank with a 32gr Eun Jin hitting at about 70flbs.

All in all, we cleaned the turnkey, and threw it in the oven and we all enjoyed a 17lb tom for dinner last night. (10in. beard)

Oh, and since I am not convinced that the warranty process of the pump will go all so well, I bought a scuba set up last night.

I didn’t even make it a month. But at least the gun’s first kill was a giant wild turkey.

Is that what the new pump looks like?

Mine is different and still falls over if left unattended… I flipped the feet around so it would fall the other way…

A better shaped base would do wonders but I think the tank and the pump were designed worlds apart…

nice one on the turkey…..headshot 12 fpe or 70… doesn’t matter gonna drop it which ever way…..

Not entirely true, as I also got a turkey earlier this summer with my old 177 Benjamin Sheridan Super Streak, and the first shot at 20 yards hit it in the head, and it flew about a hundred yards before it realized it was done, and even then I had to pop it in the head another two times from the same range while I was chasing it.

Moral of the story, the .177 is to feathers as .22 is to fur, does not always hold true.

bras fitting shearing….well if it was mounted directly to the pump and someone going monkey shit on the pump to get some pressure in a hurry then theres all that force that gets distributed to the bottle…bottle is heavy so it will flex at the weakest point…the brass fitting, it was probably just a matter of time !

First, I was laughing for about five minutes after I read this because all I could picture in my head was a monkey going ape shit with my pump.

Second ya this is true, however it looks like I forgot to mention that when I let go of the pump it toppled over onto the tank, and at that point it is just physics. You put a big long heavy leaver on something like that and it’s going to snap your soft ass brass fitting right where it threads itself in.

Yep, it was a head shot.. And as far as it not being me, it doesn’t really bother me much, I’ll have years to rack em up. Plus, it was worth the look on his face. Priceless.

I hear ya. I often let my son or guest take the shot. It is great to see them enjoy the airguns as much as I do.

A buddy and I worked on my pulling truck long and hard this spring getting it ready to pull..Even though I was the one who sunk a boat load of money into it, he did a bunch of the elbow grease so when we got called to hook to the sled i told him to go ahead and try it out..Should have seen the look on his face..I dont think he would have been any happier than if he had just hit the powerball..well maybe not that happy but he was pretty happy…. 😆

a hose to soak up some vibrations is a good idea, i used an axsor(same as logun and AF) pump for 7 years on a daily basis, only after 6½ years did the oring on the first stage piston give out, easy to get to, and a bit a silicone grease later was back pumping

NICE..was it a head shot?

I can’t believe you didn’t do the 1st kill with your gun, I’d love to get a turkey, they not only taste good, but have good feathers too. Good shooting and you are probably happy with the new set up.
