. I just bought her yesterday , she will be here in a few days . She’s not exactly a looker but the guy I got her forms a good judge of accuracy. And she’s a winner .
I’ll update with pics as I go along with the restore
Bogs the bag came filled with playsand , I removed some when I got it …They are filled so much they are like a rock when you receive them . Shot the rifle a little today after I finished my benchrest match and Sledge system is still sticking . Gonna tear it back down and install new seals and spring this week …I’ll soak all working parts overnight and that outta do it for the recoil system ..Fingers Crossed
Cricket I’ll post em good or bad. Lol…Bogs the barrel was fine , luckily it was also oily as hell which has protected it ..First pass with a cleaning rod felt like sandpaper from all the buildup. I’m soaking it overnight with Hoppes , I’ll clean it again and then lap the barrel later today . Wanna smooth it up good . Got new springs and seals ordering to do Monday .
You guys who can shoot accurately with springers have my respect. True, I have never owned a “proper” One but I doubt I would be any good. I’m generally pretty bad (according to myself) with pcp’s lol.
Joe, looking forward to seeing what this gun can do in your hands
Looks much better Joe. Plus, the scope adds a lot to a “naked” rifle.
You mentioned some surface rust; how’s the barrel looking inside?
Speaking of rust, I spent a chunk of yesterday Dremel/wire brushing rust off a stack of tools. Was working on some saltwater reels and had the tools stacked on a table. We return from ten days at the beach and I go to use them… wtf? all rusty, indoors, no sign of water?? A 9v battery on the table leaked, and as it rusted metal, the chemicals wicked further until all the tools were covered.
. Got the outside polished and able to restore the patina . Walnut stock is perfect condition….The insides were another story !!!! Sledge recoil system wasn’t working and piston was sticking and insides were caked with years of oil and dirt . Cleaned her up good and I’ll post groups in a few days if it’ll shoot 🙂
I’d make sure it’s shooting tight enough to be worth the cosmetic overhaul… you never know.
The lacquer finish sounds cool.
I get the fore stock’s large, stable design, but the front’s hard angles don’t fit aesthetically. I’d be tempted to…
Or maybe glue on a contrasting wood nose to preserve the front rest length, something to match the grip color, and make that front look less like a plow
I think I’m gonna wire brush it down to a satin steel finish and clear coat it . I did it for a while on my last one and I really liked it . But ended up using duracoat on it …..I WONT do that again !! It took like 3 weeks to cure , and its already showing wear
Hey Joe, you gonna re-blue it or just leave it as is? Reminds me of those cars GasMonkey does where they just clearcoat the old finish. I’d like to have a 300 someday but good lefty models are freakin rare and pricey. JimE. usually posts about 1, maybe 2 a year and i’m always busted when he does. Dammit man!!
Its a FWB 300s from the 1980s. It has quite a bit of surface rust and last owner made an aluminum muzzle weight to cover up where factory front sight used to be . It has a fairly nice piece of walnut and has had internals polished somewhere along the way.
I got what I think is a cool idea to try on the stock if I can work up the nerve to do it . I’m wanting to try a burned lacquer finish like they do on guitars . I got a buddy who builds custom guitars and he’s gonna help me with it if I do try it .
