Need advice (England hunting advice)
i have a new permission on a Dear farm and it is over flowing with bunnies, i shot about 30 in 60 minutes this eve but left them for the land owner to feed the dogs…
when i was shooting i came within 20 yards of a badger, it was bloody nice, fully grown adult with a striking paint job. I normally see these sods half flat on the side of the road.
i know that horse owners are not keen on them because of the TB risk but not yet sure how the land owner feels about them or if there is a risk to dear.
am i aloud to shoot it if the land owner wants it gone?

There is a youtube video of a badger taking a .223 to the forehead and still charging the guy until he emptied the mag into it at like 5 feet. Trouser chili time 😯
I have also heard of them being hit by cars, only to get up and tear the sh*t out of whatever is near them. Your dog may kick serious ass, but badgers are just plain evil.
I don’t think you’re likely to get savaged by old Brock Brutus. There more likey to flee as soon as they sense you and as you say, Getting them In the light they soon scarper.
They are very tough critters too as has been said. Long time ago they used to put terriers to ground on them. Some of the dogs had bad wounds and some would be found with bad lower jaw wounds, I’ve known of pigs kill terriers too so they are a mean beast. Still for a dog like yours I bet he would have no trouble as long as he was game and doesn’t mind abit of pain. Saying all that with It being against the law you won’t bother. Unless one did come at you then I’d be giving It both barrels and slipping the dawwwgg 😈
Doesn`t matter how big your dog is badgers are hard as nails and are more than capable of doing serious damage to it .
A badger wont attack if it can runaway as there quite timid but if your dogs biting it it wont have that option and they have very powerful jaws and front legs so even if your dog nails it its likely to get hurt in the battle.
If you leave it be it will do the same 😉
i spoke to the land owner and she said there is no problem with it staying unless she starts to have problems with the dear.
i doubt this will happen so the badger is here to stay. i am going to have to keep my whits about me when in that field.
I strongly doubt that a fit, 10stone, American bulldog will have a problem with this critter. like i said they are used for Bore hunting and have been known to kill dear if the opportunity is there.
they are not a toy dog but a farmers working dog. I am not saying i will set him onto a badger or any other animal but the security he offers would be handy if i were to be attacked by an angry badger.
Like AFC said you need a licence from Defra to shoot badgers and if you don`t and some one spots you shoot it you will be in deep poo .
Not sure what gun your considering using to shoot it but badgers are hard bastards . Ive seen em run with a good shoulder shot from a .223 cf at 80yrd so if your thinking airgun at 20yrd you will probably get eaten buy one pissed off badger 😆
Forget taking the dog unless you don`t want it anymore cos even if it does win it will probably get badly broken in the encounter 🙁
Brutus, if the farmer needs rid of a badger, then its hardly your fault if the little bugger crosses your sights just as you pull the trigger…
We are not talking about wholesale slaughter here dude. Even if the badger was at low numbers(which is bloody well isn’t) a destructive animal needs to be dealt with….
I have heard that they can be agressive if disturbed but this worries me a bit… Last thing I need is a badger chasing me across a field.
Maybe I should bring my dog on this shoot just to be on the safe side. He will have little difficulity with a wild bore so a badger should be ok.
Saying that the bright light of a white led scared him off.
It’s a general rule that you can’t shoot badgers in the UK without specific permission from someone like DEFRA.It’s hard to prove that they are doing damage.Look at the uproar about killing them to stop the spread of bovine TB and that’s the level of sentmentality that defeats scientific fact and farming knowledge.
They are killed however,secretly.The minimum calibre seems to be .222 Rem.(see Predatory Mammals in Britain published by BFSS).
Coincidentally,a couple of weeks ago a badger attacked my dog.The badger was in the field next door and detected my dog sniffing through the fence and charged,it was a very aggressive attack that pushed the fence wire in,didn’t connect with Dig’s nose but it shook us both.

Poultry is birds. Deer comes under any other property.
This section means you need a FAC and either a big bore or a centerfire.
A person is guilty of an offence if –
(d)
he uses for the purpose of killing or taking a badger any firearm other than a smooth bore weapon of not less than 20 bore or a rifle using ammunition having a muzzle energy not less than 160 footpounds and a bullet weighing not less than 38 grains.
Thanks for the link though i never manage to make complete sense of the way the English courts write the terms.
Looking at this act a badger is almost a pest only it has a wall of protection floating around it.
If you read section 1 it gives the basic guide lines as to what you can not do.
If you read section 7 sub-section 1 it says
(1) Subject to subsection (2) below, a person is not guilty of an offence under section 1(1) above by reason of—
(a) killing or taking, or attempting to kill or take, a badger; or
(b) injuring a badger in the course of taking it or attempting to kill or take it,
if he shows that his action was necessary for the purpose of preventing serious damage to land, crops, poultry or any other form of property.
Would poultry include dear? if not would dear come under property if they are on your dear farm.
Next thing to work out is would a 21.4G pellet doing 800fps do the job? i dont want to hurt it so right now i am staying on the side on NOT.

This is by far the option i will stick with. I knew the badgers are hard critters but after seeing this clip they are a bit more then i thought.
