Q:

Need LDC making advice from Donny and the rest of you..

I have a feeling this question probably doesn’t have a direct answer, but since I don’t know ill ask those that do-
I want to make a simple 1/2-20 LDC for my Black Widow(Tarantula) that’s on the way. I want to avoid lengthening the gun as much as possible. I have a lathe and the skills to make a rudimentary LDC. It will consist of the body tube, two threaded end caps, and baffles. I’m going to use the simple Marauder style baffles that I will also turn myself from a material similar to delrin, but hopefully much cheaper.
Ok, so here’s my question. Would a 2″ diameter X 4″ long LDC, be almost or equally quiet to the more standard 1″ diameter X 8″ long LDC? The 2″ diameter LDC would only have 3 baffles of the appropriate diameter and length, while the 1″ LDC would have 6. This is all just an idea at the moment that I’d like to hear some opinions on. I’m not going for esthetics here, so I don’t care if my beautiful gun looks like it has a Fram oil filter hanging off it. I just want as much performance I can get with minimum length. Thanks in advance guys.

I don’t think epoxying a washer will work. The power of the muzzle blast will blow it right out of the glue. I would recommend making thin spacers and put it on both sides of the washer to keep it in place.

That helps a ton, thanks Donny. I’ll just epoxy in place a washer or something similar. I didn’t think of the vent holes.. Another thing I’ll use. Don’t know what I’ll use for padding, perhaps some scotch bright or similar material. I guess I’ll just have to live with 6″. It’ll look much better anyway I’m sure.

Hi Haggard, I’ve tried 2 inch tube before even bigger at 4 inches long and it wasn’t as effective as a 6 inch 1.5 OD tube. Too long is not always better either for example I’ve tried 1.5 OD and 8 inches long and that doesn’t really make it much quieter than the 6 inch 1.5 OD. The important thing is giving the muzzle blast room to expand and then capturing it. I only use one baffle in mine, don’t kill yourself turning out k baffles, m baffles or colibri style baffles for the LDC. Just a simple washer is enough. Then try different materials to stuff inside to absorb the air. Small vent holes around the LDC helps as well to redirect air away from the exit hole (less blast). You will still get a small blast from the air pushing the pellet but the loudest sound should be the hammer slap. Hope that helps.
