Need slightly more fps from talon SS
Please can someone help me with a few questions all related to getting slightly more fps from my Talon SS using 21gr pellets?
My current set-up is .22 with 12″ barrel. I would like another 100 fps from it. Please can someone give their opinion on how much each of these would help:
1> Pull the top-hat out and polish it?
2> Adjust the gap?
3> Purchase a 1-piece top-hat
I have purchased a used .22 barrel that is 24″ long and I am getting it cut to 18″. I know it should give me an extra 80 or so fps, but am unsure if I will need to do more to make it as efficient as possible. Please can someone give their opinions on what change (if any) I should make to the valve for efficiency and 900 to 950 fps with the 21gr pellet:
1> Will I need a tank with a high-flow valve?
2> Could I / should I use something like one of the new DAYOTAT .25 valves?

Need more advice / help … any ideas?
So, I have a .22 Talon SS with a 12″ barrel. I purchased a used 24″ barrel and cut it down to 19″, threaded it and added a used Clague moderator and installed it. I pumped up my tank and tried it out.
My gun’s power dramatically dropped – shot at about 400fps (estimate because I don’t currently have access to a chrony). Huh?
Tried it a few times without the moderator and it was the same, slow and not very noisy. So, I re-installed the 12″ barrel.
My gun still shot at about 400 fps. Huh??
I extracted the tophat and polished it.
My gun still shot slowly.
I stripped it, cleaned the hammer and breech and put dry lube on them (outside). I checked the seals in the breech (without removing them) and they looked OK. I polished the thin end of the barrel, put silicon lobe on the seals and put everything back together, with the 18″ barrel.
Gun still shot slow, but appeared a little better (power wheel all the way up).
Shot a dozen more times and then put the gun away for a couple of days because it was still way down on power – and I was befuddled.
Took it out again this afternoon and shot some more. It still seemed slow.
But, this afternoon when shooting I noticed the breach knob move when I shoot. So I held it forward and to the side on the next shot.
Wham, it looks like I got all the power back.
I am thinking:
Ø Is my gun struggling more when the tank has more air?
Ø Should I get the added hammer weight?
Ø New / stronger spring?
Ø Why is the breech now moving and rotating back to the middle, it didn’t a month ago?
BTW: Turning my power wheel from max to about 8 slows the shot dramatically. It causes a four-inch POI drop over 25 yards. Is this normal (I don’t think it used to have this much affect a month ago)?

Summary > Use the 18″ barrel with JSB 18.1 and the Talon valve.
I get my 18″ barrel back next week so I’ll see what I can do with the JSB 18.1’s, speed and accuracy.
FYI … my whole motivation was to flatten out the trajectory (because I suck at estimating distances) and to use a heavy pellet (thinking it would help in blustery conditions).
I think I’m lucky because my Talon hasn’t been pellet picky … or, rather, my aim is generally less accurate than the gun / pellet combo. I haven’t spent the time to really compare (using a bench bag and taking a large sample of shots over different distances) but I’ll set up some tests with my 12” barrel this week so that I have a baseline before I install the 18” barrel.

Summary > Use the 18″ barrel with JSB 18.1 and the Talon valve.
With a Talon valve you’re going to be hard pressed to get 900fps out of 21g lead in an 18″ barrel. Maybe the 24″ can do it, I haven’t tried it on mine yet.
My Talon with an 18″ barrel spits 18.1g at 865 and I have no problem taking out medium size game at 65 yards. I tried the 21g and got just over 800fps and that’s all I could do and maintain a decent shot string with accuracy being lukewarm.
However, if you’re dead set on 21g, you’re going to need the Condor valve/parts with the 18″ barrel.
Mrnewbie is right, go with the 18.1g JSB’s with your 18″ barrel and Talon valve.

You are right..you will pick up 50-90fps from the longer barrel.
Advice…aim for 900fps, going way over 900 often results in poor groups. It works for some, but in general 900fps is a good place to be.
Dump the 21gr pellets (Barracuda?)…stick with JSB18.1’s or Benji domed as a 2nd choice.
JSB is the best. You could move top hat out a few turns if needed.
I think you should be able to get around 900fps with what you have now

I had similar problems on a used gun I bought. The main problem was weak and worn out o rings in the breech even though they looked fine. I changed out the breech o rings with 90 durometer rings and power came back immediately. I also adjusted the top hat to about .08 gap. (It was at .15 and wasting a ton of air) If you have an o ring behind the top hat it may also slow down your velocity unless you open your gap.
I dont see any reason for a stronger spring or heavier hammer on a stock valve.
