Q:

New 177 Pellet to hit the market…

I have just finished testing a revision to the Skenco UltraMag 177 pellet (pictures below). They will be stocked by PyramydAir in May 2012.

Improvements:
* Very consistent head and skirt diameter.
* Very tight 5 shot groups.
* Cleaner and more consistent casting.
* Lighter at 10.7gn vs the older 11.2gn

Terminal Ballistics
* 0.86″ – 22mm – Penetration depth
* 0.25″ – 6.4mm – Terminal diameter

Head – Skirt – Weight
* 4.52mm – 4.68mm – 10.78gn
* 4.50mm – 4.70mm – 10.78gn
* 4.50mm – 4.70mm – 10.54gn
* 4.52mm – 4.68mm – 10.78gn
* 4.50mm – 4.68mm – 10.78gn
* 4.50mm – 4.70mm – 10.60gn

And now some pictures….

Estimated stock date at PyramydAir is May 2012.

The older 177 was too tight in a LW barrel due to manufacturing tolerances of the pellet. The new pellet is at the sweet spot for LW and matches the H&N specifications very closely.

i got a few tins in .25, they fit comfortably. howerver, my barrel is a tight bsa which i am approximating to be .243-.246…are these typically too loose in LW barrels?

thats the basic idea, the lead peels back and the penetrator keeps going, cool

how do you center the metal tip, they look rough, if the tip is not cetered woudnt it spiral.

The tip is centered at manufacture. I understand they changed the tip insertion process to prevent pellet deformation. The head and skirt size measurements I took were from three different rotations to make sure everything was consistent.

The accuracy tests show just how accurate these pellets are. Remember that I wasn’t shooting from a gun vice – instead I lined up and made each shot off a sand bag rest… so the variation in group size is partly due to human error.

100 feet is a long way… my heart/pulse was causing the cross hairs to move at 12x magnification 🙂
