New 5 and 6 Ring Jerry Slugs are on there way

Yes, that’s the RCBS mold. I don’t know what alloy they use to come up with 50gr, it might just go a little higher with the near pure we use. I expect these 50s will be easier to load if they drop a true .251 as the front appears to be mostly bore riding with just a couple drive bands to engage the rifling. Of course, proper seating will be important to accuracy as you don’t want the bullet to find its way under initial impulse, it would be like “jumping into the barrel.”

That’s one advantage the ring slugs have, a drive band up front and several others to help guide the slug into a proper position.

We’ll see how the 5 rings do if I can get a mold cut…

OBTW, the rings are cut just as any other part of the slug, they are part of the cherry.

I expect the 50gr RCBS mold will be in soon, the 5/6 ring mold has not yet been put in the production que…

I can’t wait to get the 675gr’s across a chrony! I think the tune is too hot for the 575gr I’m using now (but very accurate at 200 yards with a red dot) so I ought to see a power boost.

Obviously, I need to work on not fat fingering the keyboard. I ordered a 50gr RCBS mold not a mols, whatever that might be!

If I can get Gary to make another 6 ring mold, it won’t be a new design, just a mold with more cavities than what Timmy is using now. Currently, the 6 rings are made in a mold that has 2 cavities and when he gets an order for 1000 of the things, he just rolls his eyes and gets to work. Going to a 4 or 5 cavity mold will help a lot with casting time. Each one will still get cleaned and sized but at least part of the process can be cut back. Having a separate mold in its own handle will help too as many orders are for multiple sizes.

Cutting 5 rings cavities on the opposite side of the new 6 ring mold is an idea to satisfy those folks who want higher velocity or don’t want to put a lot of effort into modding their guns to shoot heavies. I don’t know how this will work out. It looks like the RCBS 50s and the 5 rings will be direct competitors. I expect the flater face of the ring slug might make a difference in accuracy and terminal effects but that remains to be seen. Prices for the two slugs might differ according to the effort required to produce them. Also, the ring slugs will likely be able to be sized to larger barrels than the RCBS ACP rounds but we’ll see.

Speaking of prices, it’s been YEARS since we increased prices. I noted that one of our members has a source making RCBS 50gr slugs at $50 per 500. That’s an excellent price and one that I don’t think we’re even going to try to touch. I expect that price is tempered by making a deal for a friend. In any case, our custom slugs are not going to compete with slugs cast from a machine nor will they be “cast and bagged.” Each slug will still be inspected, cleaned, sized as required and then packaged. Each Match-grade will be weighed and sorted as always. We will also keep the coating option available. It’s expensive but does have some advantages… Anyhow, I don’t expect any price changes before January, after then, we’ll have to look at where we’re at.

BTW, while shopping for molds today, I bought a couple for one of my guns. I got a 660gr and a 675gr model. I can’t wait to see how they do! Anyone here shooting .62’s?
