New barrel coming.
After slavering over the pictures on Leupy’s site, and slowly realizing that the barrel on my rifle is some POS non-original item that’s about as accurate as a spud-gun, I’ve ordered a brand spanking new 24″-incher from him, suitably tricked out. I shall let ya’ll know the full SP on it in due course. 😀

So…. even though they sold you the lathe, they are not sure what toolpost is going to fit and are charging you extra now to “machine” you one that will fit?
Ok, you dont mention that its a “Quick Change” tool post in that thread. Make sure its that style and get yourself several tool holders.
That’s what I’m doing, per my post above yours. It’s going to be a PITA though, for the reasons outlined. They’re going to machine it either too tight or too loose (chances of spot-on first time are remote). If it’s the former I’ll have to send it back for more machining. If it’s too loose it’ll be fucked and I’ll end up going around there with a bat. 😆
I meant you can adjust each tool holder for height, not the post itself. You can be using several different size tools all with different heights and once you have them set in the holder you dont have to reset them again.
Get yourself a Quick Change Tool Post. You can adjust those for height and you can have your tools already set up in tool holders that change out in about two seconds. Its the best tool you could buy for your lathe.
I found a nice length in the coach-house, which I’ll be using to practice. I’d rather get some alli first, but it’s a long laborious process researching every tool and every bit of stock. There’s a bunch of stuff coming tomorrow though, which will allow me to get going on the steel at least. Maybe.
Unfortunately the chap who sold me the lathe wasn’t very knowlegable and neglected to tell me I’d need a toolpost that can be raised and lowered if I want to use tool sizes out of spec for my particular machine (even though I actually bloody well mentioned the point to him at the time, his answer being “not necessary”). If I’d gone for one at the point of order they’d have machined the new one to fit my specific machine. Now I have to order it blind, email them my toolpost’s mounting dimensions and hope they can get a good fit. And pay them £25 on top of the new post’s purchase price to do the machining. My lathe’s toolpost is a 3/8th’s tool size. The tools I have coming tomorrow are 10mm. So the point of cut might be slightly above centre.

It depends how much work he does to them. The basic barrel is £60, but you wouldn’t be able to do anything with it. Ready to fit:
24 inch blued and choked BSA barrel in .22 calibre £60.
Muzzle Crown with polished 11° target crown £15.
Supply and fit custom aluminium bushes drilled for tapping £30. (10 x 32UNF tap required).
Profile breech slide area £30.
Polish friction areas, crown breech and prepare lead in £5.

Yes, it’s going to be a match-grade BSA.

I don’t think any standard tool-post will fit. The boss on my lathe is 25.95mm (just a tad over 1″), and I’ve not come across any tool-post that’ll fit it off the shelf. But Chester will take one of their QC items and machine it to the specific lathe if it’s ordered at the point-of-sale. Unfortunately, when I brought it up, the salesman dismissed the notion as “unneccesary”. If I’d known then what I know now I would have insisted on one.
