Q:

New Generation of Hill Pump "MK4"

I checked out hill pump web in order to order 4 pumps for my friends and myself as well,,, i found that they have produced a new hill generation, MK4 …it looks like a great pump,,,and i think it should be great,,,because their MK3 that i have had for almost 2.5 years (i think) was worked very great and very easy to pump ,,and Mk4 must be at least smoother than Mk3 .. who knows ??? ok,,i will buy and try it ,,,,

So how is the Drierite working, GKU? Form the look at the label, it’s a Calcium sulfate instead of Silica gel. Looks porous, too, which might make it work faster.

Is the baking temperature to recharge it in the 350 degree F range?

To super-dry, I’m thinking a 2-3 inch diameter pvc pipe, maybe 24 inches long, filled with desiccant. It would be easy to make and feed to the pump intake.

It would be a lot better to make/find a high pressure desiccant rig on the pump output side.

Hi bogman,

I haven’t tried it yet, when it came in when I just refilled my pumps with Hill packs before hand.

For the regeneration of Indicating DRIERITE, the granules may be spread in layers one granule deep and heated for 1 hour at 210° C or 425° F. The regenerated material should be placed in the original glass or metal container and sealed while hot. The color of the Indicating DRIERITE may become less distinct on successive regenerations due to the migration of the indicator into the interior of the granule and sublimation of the indicator.

The rate at which it adsorbs can be adjusted by using a different mesh size when ordering, from 4-20 mesh. I ordered and got the 8 mesh thinking it has about the same surface area as the Hill dry pack granule. I would think that the smaller mesh will absorb at a faster rate but it may need to be regenerated more frequently ?

I would try and look for something clear instead of PVC ?

I will be posting its performance here as soon as I can.

Yes… I know. .. I have already placed my order for three of them and mk4 service kit and all… also some adapters. …I think I will get it by end of the week. . …last night got my last order for the mk3 …but I realised that they habe upgraded the hose ..it is longer and more flexible. ..
let me get them…i will post the results once I get them

Hill Mk4 hand pump now available at http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Hill_Pump_MK4_Up_to_3300_PSI/5501#

Good to know. We get routinely in the upper 90s (rH) during the summer rainy periods; we’re surrounded by forest and brush. Too bad the conventional dry pacs don’t have color indicators to let you know when they’re saturated/used up.

Yes that’s way I wanted to try this one it changes color from blue to a pink color and can be regenerated by baking.

I’ll get some and I’ll let you know how it is.

Yes Sir, it does here’s mines.
In Hawaii the humidity can go up in the 90s and when it does extra tactics is needed to help.

Thanks for the links!

At some point, I want to try using a few, different techniques to experiment with drying air. I’ve got a lab hygrometer, which I use for work, that can measure the outcome. Thinking of one method where air goes through a pipe, filled with coarse silica gel before going into the pump intake/dry pac. I’ve got a 5 gallon pail of coarse silica kicking around. Even if the silica tube was a separate, heavier floor unit, connected by a hose, it might prove useful.

Very similar collection to mine, GKU, except the Gehmann in my collection is replaced by a second Hill.

Where did you get the aftermarket moisture trap for the AF?

Also looking at Omega, but it’s easy enough to top off my smaller AG tanks/tubes and they’re handy to toss in the truck for field use.

It’s put out by Sun Optics, I use the Hill Desiccant pack to refill it. It replace the air intake filter on the pump. You might what to shop around for better shipping prices like Amazon but they have a minimum order of 35 $ to get free shipping.

Also looking to try this Desiccant https://secure.drierite.com/catalog3/page5.cfm
Not sure if it’s good but the stuff sound good and is cheep enough to try out anyway.

Over the years this is my collection of Hand Pumps so far. From left to right Air Force about 1 ½ years old, Hill MK 3 new, Gehmann about 12 years old, FX 4 stage about a year old.

IMHO all in all the AF/benji pump is a very good value and is a work horse. It’s been abused and keeps on ticking. I bought an aftermarket moisture trap for it. I notice that the fat over size handle makes pumping less strenuous on the hand.

The Hill MK3 is the newest in the bunch and is my main squeeze at the moment, all the rest are backups. It seems the have less strokes to top off my guns than all the others. The out tube did show signs of rust in the lube as it broke in. I had to wipe it all off and re-lube, so far it’s okay now, no rusting.

The Gehmann is for my Morini 162ei only, used in my 10m days now just a memory.

The FX 4 stroke is a made for the light weights under 120lbs, great for girls IMO. I never use the 4 th stage, never needing to top to max pressures of 300 bars which would help there.

Waiting to get a Omega one day soon !
Now there’s two models, so less excuses to get one http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/Compressor.html

Last night I have emailed hill company. ..asked about the price and if whether this mk4 provides more pressure. ..they replied me…and confirmed that the price is just the same mk3 price. ..and the provide pressure is same..but less effort needs. .. and they wrote that mk4 will be only released after 4 weeks…

A quick google search wouldn’t answer my assumption, but it sounds like this is just a ‘4 stage’ offering from Hill. In that case, it’s probably no better than the ‘old’ Mk3 (which was great, just this is no better).

For comparison, I have an FX “Mk4” (4-stage) pump. It let’s you pump to whatever pressure you think is ‘hard’ to pump, then switch to an easier fourth stage. Of course, you don’t get something for nothing, so it takes a lot more (in theory, for the FX, it takes exactly 1.5 times more) ‘easy’ pumps to get to the target pressure. If you have a very small build (i.e. don’t weigh much) this may be just the ticket you’re looking for, but if you’re over 150lbs, I’ll bet you opt to push a little harder for 1/3rd fewer strokes than go the “easy” route. In practice, although I have a 4-stage pump I use it like a 3-stage pump.

I’m sure the new Hill pump is first rate, but if you’re an average (or larger) adult and you can save a few bucks getting a “Mk3” you’ll probably be just as happy and have a few dollars to try that expensive boutique pellet you’ve been wondering about…
