Q:

New here… some questions if I may.

Hello everyone! I have been reading the forum for a while gathering information. Over the holidays I took advantage of the free c02 adapter offer from PA and bought a Talon and an SS. 😆 I’ll just claim insanity there… It also turned out that the 10% coupon I had worked on the SS package. Not sure if they still do.

Anyway, my idea was to swap barrels, making a Talon shorty, and an SS with 18″ barrel and short shroud. Then I got to reading the forum some more and started to slide down the slippery slope of converting one of them to .25. In my mind anyway.:P

Soooo, after looking around a bit, it seems that the barrels are available directly from LW for about a C-note. Of course these will have to be machined. Now, I have a lathe, and can do OK with it, and to me it seems like all that needs to be done to a barrel blank is to part it to length, and reduce the OD on the breech end. Then make some bushings and I’m home free. Is this correct? If so, it seems like a fairly simple operation and could be done for not too much dinero!

But I’m sure I’m missing something here… Advice?

Thanks!

I think talon tunes sells a drop in 25 cal, for around 180-200 bucks. and the hammers too.

Yeah, there is that, but I’m a cheap bastard. 😆

Plus, it gives me an excuse to buy more goodies for my lathe!

when I got my barrel blank it was a piece of 3/4″ bar stock saw cut on both ends with a hole drilled and rifled in the middle….so in short yea you’ll need to turn the od and breach and make some bushings….no big deal of you take your time ….best of luck

Thanks!

So it looks like I’ll have to cut it down and crown the muzzle as well. I was looking at my current .22 barrels and it looks like there is a small chamber in the stock barrels. So I assume I’ll have to ream the breach too.

I love this forum!!! 😀

Hey samurai I was getting 900fps with a stock talon valve and a heavy hammer with my 24″ barrel but of course more power is always welcome in my life 😈

X2 same here. That’s with 21.1Gr. kodiaks.

Thanks for the replies everyone! After a little more thinking and tinkering away in my garage (just vented both frames, both front bushings, and did the trigger mods), I think I’ll be keeping the barrels 18″ or under. Reading around the forums, it seems like folks are able to get around 900fps with the 12″ using a heavier hammer and Condor valve.

So back to the original question, when you get a barrel blank, do you need to do anything other than turning down the OD on the breach end? Do barrel blanks come crowned, or will I need to do that also? Is there any kind of chamber work that is needed?

I think I’m already dreaming of a Talon shorty .25 😈

Yeah, it would kind of be a waste of length without enough air to launch lead through it. You’d surely have to address the valve and or hammer…just thought I’d run it by you as a prospective option. Let me know, as I will be forced to buy one in a few days if I can’t trade. Thanks

Why not keep one of them a shorty, and turn the other one into a sniper/long ranger??? If you do, and if you are running .22 cal, I will trade you my practically brand new, proven accurate, 24″ barrel from my condor for your 18″ barrel…Just a suggestion that will work out for both of us.

It seems having one in 18″ and one in 12″ is too close to the “same animal”

You need to differentiate them a bit…ahhh, the power of suggestion 😆

Let me know if your interested!

Damn you 80! That was one of the ideas I was also having… But what type of gains would I see with the stock Talon valves? I am thinking of doing the valve mod posted in the reference section at some point…

Options Options… These rifles are evil! 😈

Make sure you cut from breech end and not muzzle end otherwise you’ll cut the choke off 😮
