Q:

New JBS heavy 25 cal pellets

What it’s the max on the velocity with theses ? I have read that you want to stay under 900 fps with pellets. Is this still true with the heavier pellet. Still trying to under stand the speed thing with pellets.

Thanks for all the help!

Very well articulated, Hootwizzle! :smilen:

Think “Subsonic”!

Air gun projectiles, regardless of caliber, don’t fly well at speeds approaching 1128 fps, with an ambient air temperature of 68 degrees F. (speed of sound at sea level)

Every gun/pellet weight/caliber has it’s own “sweet spot”, and that has to be determined by the shooter. Generally speaking, most shooters here have reported excellent results at 750 to 980 fps. Target shooters prefer to stay in the 500 fps range for 10 meter shoots, and many pure “target guns” are set for those low velocities.

You get a higher shot count by using the lowest speed at which you can get consistent results. If you are hunting, then the extra fps/fpe is worth the expense to get the extra knock-down power.

A good rule of thumb is stay below 1000 fps. There’s absolutely nothing to be gained at speeds above that, except for a loud “Crack”, a loud muzzle blast, a loss of excess air and reduction of shot count per fill.

Exception…if you are shooting shaped lead slugs, like the .257 long distance shooters, these projectiles will travel better at higher speeds, but if you want that why not get a powder burner and be done with it?
