About all you can do is show it a pic of a hot naked chick and hope for the best. May be it will get hard and may be not. 😆
The lower grades of steel don’t contain enough carbon to transform from the coarse grain structure to the fine grain structure of hardened steel.
This is what has given stainless steel such a bad name in the cutlery business. Most of the cheaper knives are made of 440-a or AUS-6. If they say, stainless, 440 stainless, or Surgical Stainless you can bet that they are of the lowest quality stainless. Even though they are stainless steel, they are a stain resisting version of cold rolled mild steel. Fine of pots and pans, flat wear etc. But useless of cutlery.

Steels are high carbon steel with enough chromium or other elements added to aid in resisting corrosion to an extent. They are not really stainless steels at all.
High Carbon Steel is fairly cheap compared to High Carbon Stainless Steels. It Cost me a LOT more for the raw steel to make a knife than what you can buy several TV Knife Show finished knives for.
Some of the Better ones are:
440-C “C” stands for Cutlery Grade, and is an excellent steel. It’s only draw back is that the 440 in it Sounds like the cheaper stuff. It isn’t. If it if C grade, the company will say so. It will be marked as such. It is a mark of pride and quality. If it doesn’t have the c following the 440, its junk. Pure and simple.
Ats-34 Japanese version of 154-CM Jet Turbine blade steel (Modified 440-C) Prized for it’s hot hardness abilities in jet engines and it’s high abrasion resistance. Hence. Edge holding ability.
154-CM The original Exotic. And still what all others are compared to.
s30-v s60-V s90-V 440-V Aus-8 (equal to 440-B, and borderline). Aus-10 (equal to 440-C.
There are others. Some better than others.
Heating mild steel, or mild Stainless and quenching it will do nothing at all if you are lucky. If you are unlucky It may very well form even larger grains known as crystalline structure in the quench and become worse than useless.
It is what it is. Quality cost money. 🙁
Not only do the exotics cost more, but are far more difficult to heat treat. Not to mention grind and shape in the first place. Even really good high carbon steel grinds like butter in its un-heardened state. Good Stainless Resisting steel is a Sum-bitch! I use only Ceramic Carbide belts, or synthetic diamond belts here in the shop for grinding. And you can buy some pretty good steak for what these thing cost! And I go through them like Water! 😥

To the point of making it brittle. It then needs to be annealed.
As with everything there is a science given the type of steels, etc. I can’t tell you what they are, but I know it’s not quite that easy. 😉

I think if you get the blade red hot then dunk it in old motor oil it is supposed to harden it.

While the quality of theknock off is not there, he did see and admire a desigh that was a leader in it’s time. This is how most people start the journey to higher quality. For this, I commend him.

Here is my current fixed blade. 7″ Randall in D2 with Micarta scales.
Replaced a Becker 9″ which was a bit too long.
Used and abused that knife and still sold it for my than I paid.
Hey YN! Nice Knife. BUT!!! It is a Randall’s, Not a Randall, The Real Randall Knives are made in Fla. in a shop founded by Bo Randall. (Deceased). And is now headed by his son Garry Randall. The prices start at apx. 700. and take several years to get. Randall Knives were carried to the Moon by the Astronauts. and have been a favorite of U.S. Pilots for decades.
The Survival Knife shown is a Chi-com knock off of a very well known factory design from about 35 years ago. It had one major flaw. They were bad about breaking at the Blade-Guard juncture. Even though they were make from first class materials.
The Knock offs are made from terrible quality materials. The 440-A used in the blades will go dull skinning a Horse Fly’s wings. Even though they can be sharpened, they can’t hold it.
The original Rambo Knife was designed by the Famous Maker, Jimmy Lile. (now deceased) He made the Knives for Rambo I and Rambo II. Rambo II was make by Famed maker Gil Hibben.
Feb the 28th if Jimmy (The Ark. Knife Smith day in Ark.) He was a good friend and helped me often when I was getting started.
Here is a shot of a Lovett Survival-Fighting Knife. It took 1st place at the Spirit of Steel Show las year for design and execution. It has taken two enemy’s to date in combat. AT least that is all I know of. I haven’t talked to the owner in a year now.

Don’t waste your money little man, that thing will never be razor sharp. It’s a $10 knife, my bro has the exact same one. I’ve sharpened it before, even when it gets sharp, only stays that way for 30 seconds, first time you look at it hard it dulls up.
Knives are very similar to scopes in money terms. A $30 scope works, you can see through it and it has crosshairs. But no matter how you polish it up, a leapers won’t compare to a nightforce. Knives are the same, your knife will work, it will cut. You can open boxes with it, no problem. But it will never compare to something knifemaker makes.
Don’t feel bad though. I have a ton of knives that won’t hold an edge at all, cheap stuff. My spyderco butterfly though, stays razor. What’s the difference, a $20 cheap folder and the $150 spyderco. You get what you pay for.
It’ll still do the job, if you know what I mean 8)

I like knives – But I’m strictly a production knife guy. I feel bad when I use a $70 knife…

Not to sound like a dush, Deutsch… but the paper is tearing rather than cutting. Any knife is cool for $10 man, especially one that you can beat on and not have to worry about messing it up.

Not sure, I have a electric sharpener for touch ups, but it cuts right through paper.
