New to Me Mutant Short that won’t Fill
OK…purchased this Shorty from the original owner and it arrived with 220 bar showing on the manometer. Shot it down to about 150 and went to fill. I use a 6000 psi nitrogen tank for all my guns fitted with a Joe B. dual gauge setup….love this rig ! I hook up the Shorty and set the output for 250 and ….nothing ! Bled the line and pressurized it to determine if the fill probe was functioning. It does and BTW when inserted in the gun with pressure on it is rock solid, I then topped off my Cricket and my Guppy tank to further verify my fill station is OK. I tried the Shorty again making sure that the hole in the probe was facing away from the gauge however this really should not make any difference. No go ! I took a Q-tip with a little alcohol on it and cleaned out the fill fitting. Tried again….no luck. I am pulling my hair out over this and am feeling a little embarrassed. Can anyone shine a light on this problem for me? Thanks in Advance !!!! :confusedn:

:rofl: OK gentlemen I am doing the happy dance! Here is what I just did. I checked the outside temp to ensure that it had risen above 30 degrees which meant my shop would be a tich warmer. Grabbed the Shorty out of the safe and went out to fill it. I did not change anything to start with. I wanted the same baseline as the last time. Only difference was today was about 35 degrees colder. The manometer in the Shorty was showing about 120. I seated the probe completely and rotated it a bit then set the output side of my nitrogen fill setup to 2500 psi. The manometer began to “slowly” rise and stopped at 200. I then bumped the output to 3500 The manometer again rose slowly and I stopped at an indicated 280. Now I have enough air to shoot again however I don’t know if I can trust the manometer. I do know when I fill my other guns and my Guppy tank that the gauges/manometers match the set output on my fill gauge. I will just watch the manometer the next few fills and see what happens. Thanks to all of you for your input.
BTW….Are there any better gauges than stock if I decide to swap this one out ?

I think the nitrogen fill tank at 6000psi may be the issue here. You may need to adjust the fill valve screw and oring by loosening the screw. Filling very slowly my help.
Just my guess but worth a try.

That’s a brand new fill probe I sent with the gun from one of the other Mutant’s I have and I never used it. O rings shouldn’t be an issue.
And you did push it in until it bottoms out, I’m sure? Sorry, just trying to figure this out. I’ve heard of leaking when filling and not being able to fill the gun without cocking it first but to hear the fill valve won’t open under THAT much pressure? That’s news to me so I’ll be watching this thread.
Fellows…..I did get extra o-rings and will get them installed tomorrow and report back, however I feel the current ones are sealing fine as there are no leaks.
Did you get any extra o rings with it? Can’t be much.
About five years ago my Marauder did the same thing, I took the orings off the probe silicone them and never a problem again.
Looking back I think I just did not have the probe in all the way, Simple fix for me.
