Q:

New TVO 2-12×32 FFP scope for Leshiy

Well it finally arrived! (mental note to self: dont order Chinese mail over Chinese New Year!)

I have hunted the globe for a suitable Leshiy scope since August and this is the best I could find.
I wanted at least 10x with a suitable airgun reticle and it needed to be compact enough to fit the case and not over hang the back of the gun when folded.
So I ordered the Tac Vector Optics Gladiator 2-12×32 First Focal Plane Tactical Compact 35mm scope with 10Y Side Focus and long eye relief.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-S-H-Vector-Harris-Style-Tactical-Bi-Pod-Mount-6-Levels-6-9-w-Weaver/618756850.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.I8gnh9

This scope ticked all those boxes. At $369usd it came shipped with 35mm low rings and a lense bikini. The price seems about right for an entry level first focal plane scope, there is a lot of glass (13 lenses) in this bad boy and its very nice German made Schott glass. It is on the heavier side of things at 720 grams but thats expected with a FFP scope. Too Heavy I hear you say? not at all.. the Leshiy is too dang light an IMO needs some weight.
Even with this scope and Atlas bipod fitted it is just over 2kgs (under 5lbs).. If your little pansy girly arms cant carry that light weight you need to join Putin’s gym.

When I first opened the box, the first impression I got was how it looked and felt like a brutal Romanian IOR Valdada scope.. built like an Eastern block brick shit house.. this thing is chunky and tough! I think it fits the look of the Russian Leshiy well.

It has a nice long eye relief at 89-140 mm (3.5-4.5 Inch) so again perfect for this application.
After fitting and leveling it I zeroed it and did some tracking test which it passed with flying colours.
The best feature on this scope other than its compact size for such a large magnification range is its side focus parallax range down to 10 Yards and its marked 10, 12, 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 500.
The 10 to 50 yard adjustments seem to be bang on giving a crystal clear image but after the 50y mark the dial seems to “mush out” and there is no notable focal change in clarity from 100 to 500 yards but holds fucus and is clear at all ranges.
The turrets are big.. very big, they have a nice click but feel a little mushy compared to the TVO marksman range which are superb. it has a massive ± 90 MOA of adjustment range on both windage and elevation which should please the knob twiddlers amongst us.

The reticle is First (Front) Focal Plane etched glass Mil-dot reticle and is a little thick at 12x but I had no problem putting 5 shots in the same hole off the bipod at 50y and 5 shots inside 3/4″ at 100y on 10x zoom.

Things that could be better:

*The turrets, like I said they are bulky and spoil Leshiys low profile when folded and slipped into a backpack etc. This would be much better with the Marksman series Low profile turrets. (they dont fit… yes I tried)

*The mildot reticle is chunky, oh what a sweet scope this would be if it had Mil turrets instead of MOA and the MPN-1 Reticle like the TVO marksman scope range.

* 12x FFP, this makes your head/eye position a little fussy in the 8 to 12x zoom so you need to get good at repeating your cheek weld for a good picture without reticle ghosting. It is much better than the TVO 1-6x28FFP scope in this department but still worth mentioning.
Id love to have this scope as a 10x SFP scope.

* The Parallax adjustment dial works the opposite direction to all my other scopes, I guess it has to do with the front focal plane lenses but when Im pesting at speed due to high speed nervous targets I can see that’s going to slow me down and miss out on shots until I get used to it.

*Illuminated Reticle.. I just dont need it or use it.. just added weight and bulk.

Over all Im very happy with the purchase and it works great on the Leshiy. I can finally pull the foam out of the case to match a scope that I intend to keep on this little PCP.

thanks for report

i have found this same as yours but made by KANDAR with low profile turrets

in appearance the low turrets looks much better than vector turrets

also if you order as sample it cost much cheaper .. i did contact them total price+shipping $198

while vector 2-12 cost over $400

thanks for your reply Dman.

Its the matador R3 .. it replaced the R2.5 in 2011.
The parts are not interchagable. The R3s barrel threads into the forward breech and is tesioned with the forward suppressor nut.
R3 has now been replaced by the R3M multishot in 2013.

Where have you been for the last 6 years? :biggrinn:

that’s a nice Edgun! that shrouded piece between the barrel shroud and receiver, is that available and will it fit the 2.5! the painted one.

Although Im sure the turrets would hold up just fine I think Leshiy really isn’t a gun that you would be dialing in shots all day. Im sighted at 50 yards and can hold over to 100m no probs. realistically at 800fps I dont often shoot past 70 yards.

This scope just turned up so no not all tins were shot with this scope on.

I have shot another 16 tins of 18gr .22 since xmas also!

I keep forgetting you’re on the other side of the globe.

You’ve shot 36 tins with that scope mounted? Guess my concern is how the turrets hold up over exended use of dialing, returning to zero, tracking, etc.

Not really familiar w/ overall quality of TVO and $300 for a FFP w/ good mag is a great price.

Im not sure what else to say about this optic other than Im still happy with it and unless someone makes a compact fixed 10×28 or 32 it will stay on Mr Leshiy. Its not perfect and yes it could be better, I dont understand why the reticles have the cross hairs running through the mildots as it only makes it thicker but its still very usable and I like it.

Ive shot through 36 tins of kings since xmas so you could say its been a good summer..

Looking forward to tracking your experience with this optic over the next few months.

I agree the MPN-1 reticle would be an improvement and more streamlined turrets. I read your 1-6x optic review and hoped it would be great, but wanted more mag out of it. This may fit the bill for small pups, sub-100m hunting.

thanks

quote Wingman NZ:

Interesting.. mine came directly from the Vector optics factory in a cool Vector box with all the usual papers etc.
I wounder if yours was a copy or had been apart and “repaired” or something? No signs of excess grease or silicone on my one. I have had Hawke scopes and they are not even in the same league as this little TVO.. its build quality is great and optics all the way to 12x are very clear and bright. Its FFP so I expected the eye position fussiness in the higher mags but it focuses clear on all settings. My scope cam even likes this one.. Ill try get some video up of it soon.

First time i have bought a item from this particular vendor – None of the major optic vendors in the UK stock this brand and i actually got interested in this particular model from a mention you made on one of the other threads along with your endorsement in general for vector optics, i couldn’t find the gladiator on vector the web pages so ordered from one of the smaller airsoft vendors in the UK the non branded packaging lack of paperwork the poor optics and the lack of response from the vendor and your own experience lead me to think this in an inferior copy, i will follow your progress with the scope and if i ever receive a refund from the vendor go the direct route.

I seem to be able to get the scope cam to focus on the reticle and the target for still shots but the reticle is blurry when videoing.. no big deal as I don’t intend to make movies with this little guy but here’s a short vid zooming between 2x and 12x. the Gongs are at 50 yards.
Took it out for a bit of feathered target practice this afternoon and it is very usable. I found 10x to be nice for the shooting I did between 20 and 75 yards.
Picked off another bucket of sparrows, a few starlings and couple of bonus pigeons.

Well, if anything it looks cool. I would like to see scope cam going from min to max magnification

Received Mine on the 07/02/17 – i have to agree with most of your observations – solidly built but poor quality next to the favoured Hawke Airmax most seem to be fitting to Leshiy, mine had grease on all off the moving parts and the objective lens retaining ring appeared to be covered in black silicone sealant – for my eyes i found the Hawke clearer throughout its zoom range where the Vector struggled after 6x, Hawke and its SFP and reticle i much prefer – never weighed the scopes but Vector was very heavy in comparison, bought mine from a dealer in the UK no paperwork at all in the package a few allen keys bikini scope covers and not flip ups, a vector optics lense cleaner in the box along with vector optic loggoed rings but no manufacturer logo on the main box, over all i would rate it very poorly even below the bug blaster i have knocking around, i settled for a Viper PST 2.5-10 x 32 as my leshiy scope a while back bought the Vector and wasnt expecting Vortex quality but it to at least match the Hawke for optics and finish, for me a Viper PST compact version SFP with 10 yd parallax would be my perfect Leshiy scope.

Well say goodbye to the sparrow population in New Zealand, I was planning a trip to kill sparrows with you but now why bother

That scope is a perfect size, right price, and magnification. I can’t wait to try one.
