Q:

Newbie to Board and Mutant Short Owner – 1st take and question

Glad to find the board.

Well I took the jump into deep in of the pool after buying my first PCP,Discovery, in July. I needed an airgun that was relatively light weight (shoulder surgery 6 months ago), left-hand friendly, accurate, around the $1000…ergo the Short. With the rage over the trigger, accuracy, weight….I was sold.

I got my TMS , last week, unboxed and was excited as a high school junior on prom night. I mounted a UTG SWAT as a temporary setup until I pick one. I won’t bore you repeating what I have seen on previous posts, but I will personalize my opinion and questions in brief:

STOCK – Quite acceptable with a noticeable tiger stripe grain. Grip and balance felt great.

UNBOXING – I was surprised to see lube weeping out of every orifice and connection.

Trigger – OMG! Must be like what it feels like when you take a hallucinogen for the first time. Euphoric, if not slightly scary, light. When I came down off the ceiling, I did notice that it would need a slightly longer 1st stage and shorten the creep in the 2nd…but geez…what a trigger!

SHOOTING – While the gun was doing it’s part, I was still on my first prom. Siting it in at 15 yds. was a breeze. Shot’s at 20 yds. strangely opend up and I got more nervous. The problem was personal. Trying to finding a good hold, position on bags, seating height, and shouldering with a bullpup was unusual for me. Took it to a neighbors yard where I have permission and a 35 yd. target, and shots got a lot better. Again, I am dealing with operator error, not the airgun capability. It’s a tough range as it is from a window with a 30 degree declining slope that is not very ergonomic, but great for backyard hunting.

METAL FINISH – Man…I was a little sadly shocked. I am not very picky, but if I were selling this gun I would have to classify it as a “well used hunting airgun…definitely not a safe queen”. When I held it in sunlight, I could see a whole lot of marks on every metal piece. I ain’t mad, but surprised. I was told that the finish is fairly standard for this gun and that is why it is a great $1100 airgun and not aa great $2500 airgun.

SUMMARY and QUESTION – I like the gun …..a lot…but I need to know: “Is this metal finish pretty much what an owner can expect with the Short?

See attached pics….opinions appreciated.

Any member of this forum is never alone when there is trouble or problems with your pcp gear. There’s a LOT of experience and connections to be utilized in times of need. All it requires is a sense of humor because we can get a bit out of line around here.

Kind Regards,

Well all’s well that ends well….. I returned the business side of the Short and got a nice replacement. It tested out 2 fpe highe and 10 fps faster, while having an improved SD. The finish is better, but not what I would consider excellent bluing. However, I am extremely happy with the gun. It shoots waaaay better than I do. And I have been feeding it pellets trying to improve my game with significant incremental improvement.

OBTW, I was compensated shipping costs for pellet. Worked out great!

Thanks all for your advise and support.

Mine sure doesn’t but I have only seen it in person.

I examined my Mutant Shorty carefully…it does not have the cosmetic markings in mention. It is blued and smooth throughout it’s length.

Okay, I heard from MAtt at WWAG. He received the gun minus the stock and noted the marks. However, he stated that the largest marks (2″) on the air cylinder are common to Mutants. In addition, he stated that he check every gun in the shop as well as the ones they own have the five marks around the air tube. He stated that the five – 2 inch marks are from the lathe during machining, from the chuck. He also stated that they may not be visible on other guns depending on orientation.

Anyone else agree?

The mark should be similar to below:

The good news is at least R&L has the facilities to do high quality bluing and anodizing.

Can you reveal who told you that the finish on that gun was normal?

I’m working with Matt. I contacted him with pictures and he said it was a new gun. Also agreed for me to keep the stock and return the rest. All things working in the right direction. I’ll call him later.

We are fairly close knit on this forum, and several of us know Randy, so we are curious how this turns out.

We have bought a LOT of guns from Randy…he needs to make this right…keep us informed.

Randy has always been fair.

The reputable vendors are all quite aware that their sales go on the forums in front of the court of opinion and we can be merciless. It can and does impact their businesses. Sometimes the vendors respond in person to extenuating circumstances we were unaware of as well on here. Can you reveal who told you that the finish on that gun was normal?

Many Short mutants had some resting marks from where the parts were set when they were blued (and I do see those on your gun) but those few marks are easily fixable with some cold bluing to the point they are undetectable. Your gun looks like it was marred and scratched besides a bad or retouched bluing job. Something is amiss there.

It will all work out, hang in there. And you’ll have a very nice little shorty with that stock.
You pick the right bullpup too get, the Taipan shorty is really a great gun.

But what gets me is how in the world, would some one let that gun go out the door.
And think a person, would be happy!

Now it cost you about $40- $50 dollars too send it back.
Make sure you get them, too pay, all the shipping costs.

It’s not your fault, & good luck. :angrymob:

Thanks all for the input. This has been very informative and supportive. Just for the record, this is not a put down of WWAG. As I mentioned, they said the “finish” was standard and there may have been some confusion. I sent them a email and I am sure we will resolve the issue. What I wanted and received here was some feedback and insight from you more experienced shooters/gun owners.

Much appreciated,

Craig

So WAGG has the Shorts on sale for about $1200 (1185). Did you say you got it for less? I think Randy will make it right.

Be certain to view these videos and pictures. They show you how to adjust the trigger for 1st, 2nd, and Let-Off stages.

All the Youtube links are there, and each is identified as to it’s subject and purpose. They make adjustments and disassembly very simple!

Good luck with the dealer on getting a replacement action. Let him know Talonairgun.com Mutant owners are watching to see what he does, and whether he stands behind his merchandise!

PS: Those pics certainly look like some of the pcp’s I’ve seen demo’d at gun shows, or across the counter at gun shops. Technically, it’s “new”…but it’s certainly not what you expected when you ordered it.

Post a pic of the other side, of the stock.
A full side pic. :suprisedn:

On this side the grain is as not contrasted as much. However in the best light…..
