Next – Defensive Shotty
I’m feeling nasty and am about to buy a home defense shotgun.
I’ve definately settled on a Mossberg 590 or 590A1 Special Purpose, due to ergonomics of the safety and slide release vs the 870. The 590 series has two shell extractor pins vs the 500 and the A1 steps up to metal safety button and trigger guard.
Regardless, I’m going to mount a tactical light to the magazine tube and a side saddle.
Would you go 6+1 capacity with 18.5″ barrel or 8+1 with 20″? I’m not sure if there is a magazine extension available for the 18.5″ that will still keep the magazine length shorter than the barrel.
Also… three dot sight, or the Mossberg Ghost Ring? Keep in mind, the dark.
I think the six position adjustable stock looks bad ass, but I think I’ll go with the SpeedFeed due to ergonomics of reaching the safety in a shouldered position.

The mini shells are cool. I’ll have to get some and do a damage evaluation vs 2 3/4″ shells. I think Aquila makes some too if I’m not mistaken. I’m going to keep it loaded with #1 buck, which the minis are available in. A 2 3/4″ shell will hold 16 of the .30 cal balls.
I’ve looked through a lot of shotguns, and the semi’s and full autos are badass, but I want to keep the HD gun to a pump. Want to rely on myself to chamber the next round. Plus the ratchet of the slide just sounds fuckin menacing… enough to make any would be intruder shat their pants. I’ve seen the SuperShorty and IMO it’s overpriced… I don’t want to worry about if it’s going to fly out of my hands or not either. 😆 I’m going to get a bit smaller hand cannon for concealment.
As for a bright ass light, I’ve got a Fenix TK11 R2 I’ll probably be mounting on it. I’d say it’s pretty damn blinding. The hotspot from the LED will throw about 200 yards. It’s built pretty well too, I don’t think it’s quite as sturdy as the SureFire I had, but it’s just a tad bit lighter and brighter. Regardless, it’ll survive a blow if I knock it on something. SureFire makes a forearm with integrated light and controls, but it cost about as much as a new shotgun. 😆
I’ve got an 870 Wingmaster in 20 as a bird gun. Looking for “Tacticool” though. It’ll be looked at more than used for shooting people. 😆

The Mossbergs are nice, I’ve got a 500 with 18″ barrel and Choate top folder stock.
But if you’re looking for the ultimate HD shotgun, consider a Saiga 12.
10 rounds of semi-auto lead delivery. 20 round drums are available. 😯 How the govt hasn’t managed to get them restricted as a Destructive Device is beyond me, but I ain’t gonna say anything…
Don’t know what the 590 goes for these days, but you can find the basic Saiga for about $500 or so. A few more bucks for the adjustable stock and pistol grip, and you’ve basically got a 12 gauge AK47.
Python, when I think 12 gauge I think center mass and for home defense I would recommend either a blinding flashlight and whatever the illumination ring lights up, well, you get the idea. Also, laser (one that could handle the recoil of course) put that dot on your target and have a carnage zone covering a 12″ circumference around that dot! Much easier in the heat of CQB than trying to aim through ghost rings or any other sight for that matter.
That super shorty is sweet, and that street sweeper is cool and low recoil. With the super shorty, you could put three two inch centurion shells in the mag and one in the chamber for four shots…not bad guys, but I think I’ll get one of these instead:\ 😈

Only a 2+1 capacity, but it’s 16″ long overall. You can put that in the nightstand. Plus I have to imagine you wouldn’t need more than 2 shots, that itty bitty barrel probably has a pattern a few feet wide at 10 yards. 😀

Try out some of these “mini” shells from centurion. I talked with a few guys who used them and thus far they have no feeding problems. You get better shot capacity to ensure follow up just in case you are dealing with a “home invasion” party of three or more 😉

He was chasing a guy that had just robbed a friend of his on the street. Thief had a shotgun under his trenchcoat.
We all put the word out on the thief. When he found out who he had shot, he turned himself in before we got to him.

As an alternative to the rifle, I held a Taurus “Judge” today. It’s a revolver that shoots .410 shotgun shells as well as .45 ACP. Mix and match.
