Nitrogen

Why is it that when my SS starts performing like the beaut it is I feel the need to tinker. Have ordered the Blodnob from Sean, can’t wait (but guess I will have to).

I remember reading something about using Nitrogen instead of Air, and getting a huge 4500psi mother of a tank to refill.
Can’t remember but how does nitro behave and what are the constaints ( before I blow my self up).

All in the quest for more shots and downhill umph.

I have checked with my welding supplier on the nitrogen possibility too. There is a very wide range of tanks out there. fills can be anywhere from 2800 psi to 6000 psi. The lower pressure (cheaper) tanks will only net minimum full fulls of the gun and you still pay full price to refill; no cheap topoffs. The 6000 psi with good regulator is a viable option as this would allow use of almost 60% of the fill vs the 3000psi tank where u would only use 20% of volume before needing a topoff at full fill price. The cost breakdown I got was somewhere between using scuba fills and buying a compressor. If scuba is not locally available to you it is a good option (only in the 4500psi or higher tanks) you can always fill a smaller “pony” bottle from the big one for field/travel use. Yes, if you have an 80-100 cubic foot 3200psi cylinder, you could fill from it and topoff the smaller cylinder from the big nitrogen cylinder. Most of us would probably only need the big tank filled a couple times a year.

MikeMilts(sp) be sure you check out that rental tank,at that price it sounds like a 2,200 t0 2,400 psi fill,thats to small a tank for 3,000psi.

The 3,000 to 3,500 come with a CGA580 valve but after that they use a CGA677 valve. If you use a reg. use a piston type of the correct pressure rating. If you are looking for a lower price 3,500 psi reg, with tanks pressure gauge and output gauge ,go to welding depot thats the one i use on my 400 cu.ft. nitro at work, i did change to CGA 677.

A little friendly advice,many of us have more that a few PCP and one of the new one out ,i love mine ,only use 2,000 psi,,so before filling any tank or gun tube , Think about what you are filling ,before you open that valve ,are you filling a 2k or 3k tank!!

When it comes to gases, three basic laws apply; Charles, Boyles and Dalton. Charles Law is the one that Air gunners need to understand to stay safe. It states: “At a constant pressure the volume of a confined gas varies directly as the absolute temperature.” Simply it means, if you fill a cylinder with a gas and heat it, the volume will increase within the cylinder. Since the volume can’t expand into a larger area the pressure increases. Every gas has a different temperature/volume coefficient. Always understand the gas you’re working with.

I have seen SCUBA tanks charged to 3,000psi @75º measure 3400~3700psi when exposed to direct sunlight. This is why it’s never a good idea to overcharge a tank. Tanks are designed with these safety margins in mind. Over fill one and you’ll be flirting with a Darwin award.

The biggest advantage I can see to using nitrogen is no oxygen. Oxygen is an oxidizer that promotes corrosion.

I’m getting my gases mixed up then my bad. I didn’t mean to misinform/mispost. It is a touchy subject on alot of forums and any posts i see on it usually get flamed and then deleted. I’ve read about gases lighter then air being used, Helium was one of them and there is another which i thought was nitro. I seem to have forgotten which and assumed it was nitro. Its my understanding that gases lighter then air up the velocity because they are lighter. Is this correct? I’m, not one which would go this route, its more of a curiosity for me. Schools in session and i’m listening.

Come on old man, I conceded to that fact here, no need to argue my ignorance on gases which can be used, but carry inherant dangers. Answering my question would have been sufficent, as i do yours when i can. If we all quit before we had answers, where would any of us be??? To tell someone to quit because they misinterpreted or confuse a substance, yet with hold any of your own experience either read or first hand is saying what?

Mike, does that include the valve and gauges? You dont want to just crank open a 4500 psi tank and hope you stop filling at 3000 in your small tank. Airguns of Arizona rent/lease a Nitrogen tank but they had to rent/lease the regulator on top of that. They told me to buy the regulator would be around 300. Ive tried to find a regulator that would work for this application and they are super hard to find with the right specs.

If you are going to be filling at home that is a good idea. But remember that tank is huge and can not be carried around. Also it will need to be chained to a wall for safety reasons and you will need to invest in the needed adapters to fill with it. All of this can be done but it needs to be done with care.

I don’t learn anything that way, and is not a attitude i take. I generally fumble around till i get the answers i’m after. Quit is not in my vocabulary. 🙂

Sounds like you are rehashing from memory with no personal knowledge of the use of nitrogen.

Nitrogen is about as equal to air as any gas available.
Use it and no worries.
I think Bod is confusing Helium and Nitrogen. Quit while you are ahead 🙂

N2 is used in paintball for years. The reason for it is it easier to get from gas suppliers where HPA is not easily obtained.

Like I said before our air we breath is mainly N2. It is totally safe to use in airguns. Airforce even now says N2 can be used in their guns with no problems.

Nitrogen will not make any difference in velocity.
You will not notice ANY difference at all. Well, besides
nitrogen being more costly than air.
