Q:

No consist groups at 50 yards – help please!

I’ve had my Condor SS .22 for about 2 months and it is completely stock with no mods. No issues with the gun mechanically thus far.
I purchased 4 tins of ammo based on my research to start finding my “magic pellet”
They are as follows: JSB Monsters in 18.1 and 25.4, and H&N Barracuda Match in 21.3, and H&N Field Target in 14.6.
I shoot at power level 4 and always between 2500 – 2000 psi. This combination seems to provide the best controlled noise level for my neighborhood back yard shooting.
The H&N 14.6 shoot too loud for my neighborhood so I didn’t even try to shoot groups with them.
The JSB 18.1 and H&N 21.3 shoot a quarter size consistent group at 30 yards, but then at 50 yards the group expands to about a half dollar and start to spread after 5 or 6 shots. Just when I think the JSBs are right on target, they will start to spread so I switch back to the H&N.
I want to keep the gun stock for now with no mods, so is this the best I can expect out of these groups?
I am shooting prone on the ground with the forearm supported and feel I am steady as a rock when shooting.
Should I try some other kinds of ammo or settings on the gun.
My only goal right now is to shoot as consistent a group as possible at 50 yards on paper for maybe 10 shots or so.

Thanks in advance for all your input and I truly enjoy reading all your posts.

sweet nuf said,

I now have a Vector Optics 4-16 x 50 my friend gave me new in a box.
Originally had the Air Force scope that I returned for a refund. (advice from knifemaker)
My top hat is set at the thickness of a nickel ( advice from Tony) and now have loc tite on the screws.
Have an o’ring behind the top hat and power wheel set at 4.4 and start at 2800 psi (advice from leadlofter)
With JSB 18.1s I am hitting quarters at 50 yards and pop cans at 80 -100 yards and the gun is super quiet.
I am very happy with the way the gun is shooting for me now.

Thanks to any and all who offered their tips.
My advice to anyone having questions about this is gun is take the time to study this forum from top to bottom and see who the guys are with the most experience and wisdom and try everything they suggest.
Eventually you will find the recipe that will make you happy with your gun.

Regards to all.

had my .22 Condor SS for about 5 months now. The only “mod” is a Talon Tunes Adjustable Tophat (the one with inserts).
18.1 JSB’s have been my most accurate pellet to date. I run the smallest insert, and set my PW(power wheel) at 8. I usaully fill to 3000psi though the gun seems to sing at about 24-2800 PSI. If I do my part (consistant cheek weld and loading procedure) the gun will put 3 JSB 18.1’s in one ragged hole at 75 yards. Sometimes more, occasionaly less, all depending
on me. Don’t be afraid to move the PW. In my experience PW settings were repeatable if you wanna go back and forth between settings for different pellets. Just take notes and HAVE FUN! Getting these guns dialed in is part of the fun. Ther is a wealth of knowledge on this forum. I would be screwed if it were not for the people on here, and their knowledge they so readily give at the drop of a hammer on a tophat.

let me try,

first what scope are you using; do you adjust your parallax for the 50 yard shooting.

you have not said what your top hat gap is.feeler gauge , or feeler gauge with calipers is what i use
http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=feeler+gauges
usehttp://www.harborfreight.com/6-inch-digital-caliper-47257.html will do fine

get that loc tite on the top hat first thing, you cant do anything with the to hat moving around

you are filling to 2500 and PW in 4 to 5 so i think that possibly you may being starting out at a acceptable velocity for accuracy but as you shoot strings your velocity is rising to high for accuracy.

I can look for my setting for the 18 grain Jsb if you want them. my best luck with them was in the low 900’s .

Try every different pellet you can :4:

All very helpful – thank you.
At the suggestion of someone at Air Force I am going to try a different scope.

iI hope they weren’t suggesting their own branded scope. It SUCKS!!! 😯

I had a condor ss before. I believe a regulator and heavy hammer are key to group well.

All very helpful – thank you.

Try a bipod: http://www.airforceairguns.com/AirForce-Airguns-Bipod-p/u1006.htm

I have a .25 cal Condor SS, found JSB Exacts to be the most accurate, but H&N Barracuda Hunters are pretty darn good too. One hole groups for me. Also, a high magnification scope is recommended, such as a 4-16 x 50.

Thanks Idp.
I will give that a try!

How hard do you hold the gun or lean on the gun while shooting? When i first got my condor i was used to shooting powder burner bench guns that i could lay on with a firm cheek weld and trying to shoot my condor that way was causing my groups to move around and open up and have no consistency. I read a post about the frame flex these guns can have and started holding it with less pressure with my cheek weld and supporting the tank directly under the point i put my face on the tank to try and minimize any pressure put on the guns frame and it worked very good for me.
