Q:

Noob.

Just wanted to to say hi to the forum (hope this is the right place). New to air gunning, but I ordered a AAA Condor 25 from Tony. Hasn’t come yet, but I am patiently waiting (not very well though). Been lurking the forum for a while. I look forward to picking you guys brains though.

Well that is a big jump from a Daisy pumper to talon AAA Condor .25 , I would want a bigger caliber for hogs, but there are a few that do it with the 25,. Walt in Hawaii has killed a few with his 25 i think.

Oh , like filing one box with a bunch more boxes. If you put the cardboard where you are shooting into the edge of the cardboard, it is allot more durable and will take allot more shots that way. I guess i have made every back stop you could think about over the years, phone books , card board , carpet, magazines, etc.

When it comes time to shoot you are going to want something sitting out there ready for you, and not have to haul it out, you are going to put thousands of pellets down range with that condor so you are going to need a durable waterproof back stop.

What air guns do you have , is the power going to be new to you.

The last air rifle I had was a Daisy multi-pump when I was 12. This will be my first since then and I’m 40 now. Also I haven’t fire any type of gun in over 15 years. Wanted to start getting back into shooting and doing some hog hunting. I live in Florida, and hogs are the only game besides rabbits that can be legally hunted with air guns in Florida that I will eat.

Well you might build your box out of wood so the rain will not kill it, and make a nice top so the rain wont get on your targets or the cardboard face.
The thing is with higher powered air rifles if you shoot in the same place allot of time , and you will with that bad ass talon tuned condor , the pellets can make there way thru, so a thick wood or metal back will insure that you don’t get a pass thru.

now this is with a 4” thick box, if you have a deeper box say 6” or more a 3/4” piece of ply wood or so woud probably be ok in the back of the box, because if the pellet make’s it’s way to the wood thru the mulch it wouldn’t have much energy left to do much but dent the ply wood.

For a quicky large back stop , you could get a box like 2′ by 2′ and fill it with mulch and just shoot away. but it will eventually fall apart ,

The duct seal is $ 1.99 at home depot, and $2.50 at Lowes. it’s in the electrical section ,

I think Wok built a trap using an electrical box from lowes or such and filled it with duct seal.

Archery bag target , do allot of off hand shooting and sighting in etc. and the kids shoot at this one. This is at 36 yards and the metal duct seal target is at 50 yards.

Thanks again powderburner. Nice traps BTW. I have a lot of ideas for traps that I can build cheaply now. I guess what I was thinking with the moving boxes was creating a berm not a trap. The cardboard would weigh less and be cheaper than wood. I intend to store the makeshift berm in the garage when I am not using it. I will put a peice of plywood in the back of the box though. Better to have it and not need it than not have it and need it.

If you have the gun turned all the way up , it will shoot thru a 2×4 with say 2 or 3 hits in the same spot at 35 yards easy. My condor 22 will shoot about half way thru a 2×4 at 80 foot pounds of energy at 35 yards with one shot.

I live in the city limits too, and needed a silent pellet back stop, i have built a steel pellet trap with duct seal in it and it works great. You could build an area out of 2×6’s for a solid back stop to catch any strays, and set your metal trap in front of it, you might try to put duct seal in your metal trap. but you will need a couple of layers for the .25 at least.

I shoot archery so i use my older archery target bags for a larger quite back stop, they have hollow fill in them and when you get the burlap bag shot off the front of the bag then only the hollow fill is exposed to catch the pellets. The pellets slap is kind of loud off the burlap bag until it gets worn off, and if you shoot in one spot very long it will work its way Thru, so you need to have solid back stop behind and or i dug the hollow fill out of the bag and put in a piece of 2x 12 in the middle of the hollow fill and you cant here it hit the 2 x 12 because the wood is covered by the hollow fill.

I have also made pellet stops with the rubber mulch from Lowe’s or home depot , it work great and is silent except for the pellet hitting the target slap. i made it with a cardboard box and put a light piece of steel in the back and filled it with the rubber mulch, right at 6” will stop a 140 foot pound 22 long rifle, so for any of the air guns it works great. you could fill your metal trap with it and tape a piece of cardboard on the front to hold the rubber mulch in the trap . then tape the targets on the card board.just tape up the holes in the cardboard when the mulch starts to fall out.

There are allot of ways to build a trap, but i think the least maintanace free traps are the duct seal traps.

This is the trap i built for out side and it gets shots at the most, i have the back piece of heavy steel to stop anything up to light 38 special, i have the rubbber mulch to make it silent, and even if it hits the steel it is muffled, then i built a duct seal slide in partition to catch all but the heaviest things shot into it,then i can pull the duct seal partition out and shoot into the back if i want.
In the first pic is a small steel pellet stop that i buil along while ago i i have the rubber mulch in it too.

Thanks powderburner. I read about the duct seal traps and have a trip to home depot planned to price it, but I really like your rubber mulch idea Stealth is nice, but I’m not sure its all that important. My neighbors don’t walk around with their phones looking for an excuse to call the cops on someone. The kids behind me are always blowing stuff up with homemade firecrackers and no one seem to care. I’ll go out to smoke and I’ll hear and see fireworks going off as late as 1 AM and no cops show up. I am mainly looking to safely have as large a shooting area as possible so I can not only work on my shooting skills, but watch the destructive power of the AAA Condor .25. I think I can make something work with the rubber mulch.

If I fill up moving boxes with the mulch, do you think I will still need the steel plates?

At left is the cardboard box pellet stop that i made with the much and piece of steel in back.

I made this one for in the house to be able to put notebook size targets into it, and give more aim points and have the maintqnce free less trouble duct seal to shoot into. Have a nice piece of steele at back so the condor cant shoot thru it.

There are allot more idea’s on the forum if you search and look around.
But since you already have the 22 bullet trap i would try and fill it with duct seal or mulch to quiten it. and make a small wall with 2×6’s for a large back stop,

Welcome ,

have you built a pellet trap yet, might as well get it over with while your waiting.

I bought one of those small traps for 22 lr rounds from pyramyd air, but I know that will get old shooting at pretty quick. Any suggestion on what to use to have a bigger shooting area. My back yard is about 70 yards end to end where I will be shooting. I will mainly be shooting 30-50 yards. I live in a subdivision so I am surrounded by neighbors and my fence might as well be paper knowing the power of this gun.
