Q:

NSA .22/23gr slugs thru Mutant standard

Got bored and ordered up some new NSA slugs for the Mutant. Heard good things about the company and products on the big bore side and decided to give them a try. These are a fairly new item for NSA and seem to be in the right weight class for .22 cal PCP’s.

23gr slug with a BC of ~ .075. Wow, looks like a winner on paper should equate to some good down range energy retention. Pellets not even close to this BC. At this weight I anticipated around 800fps out the Standard but wasn’t sure due to the form factor and lack of skirt. Well my fears where unfounded. First two shot’s across the chrono were 838 exactly but getting close to going off the reg. Cool! 36 ft/lbs. Lack of skirt or sealing doesn’t seem to be an issue. Weight and diameter are pretty much the same for each slug since these are swaged in a press. Velocity and diameters should be super consistent.

Next up I wanted to see what the expansion and rifling engagement on the slug looked like. Out comes a 3lb tub of plumbers putty. Blamo!! First shot goes right thru from 13yds. lol. Ok, I am going to lay it down long ways. This is what I pulled out. Expanded to .33 inches and beautiful rifling engagement. Very sharp and crisp. I think this has a lot of potential. Strelok calculates with the above BC/Velocity that this slug is still close to 700fps (25ft/lbs) at 100yds and 590 fps (17ft/lbs) at 200yds. I have not shot this slug at long range or done any accuracy testing… maybe someone will get to that before I do. Its cold and snowy here! Cheers! -DT

Wow , Just 100 slugs?
I may sound like a cheap ass, But I am going to stick with my JSBs , 99.9 % of my shots are at sparrows and Euro doves, Grackles got to smart,
Not sure what I would use them for,
Mike

Mike,

Yeah! So 14.99 plus 7.00, basically $22.00 for 100 pellets. .22 per pellet. They are expensive and I would like to know about performance at 75 yds and beyond. I’m getting pretty good results from JSB 18.13gr, shot starling at 83 yds yesterday and barely missed another…moved before pellet got there. So $19.00/ 500= $.04 per pellet (JSB)

Why would anyone pay 5x for a pellet that dosent out perform JSB. I understand more FPE, but not sure if I need it. So OP was to get more info, but it seems that no one is talking about these anymore.

Maybe the new pellet,
But I got a question, 21 gr 22 slug, It gives price and weight and all even shipping , Are they sold buy weight
How many do you get for 14.99 + 7 bucks shipping???
Mike

Dan,

How is your accuracy with the 21 gr .22 NSA slug, and at what distances?

Hey Guys,

Rifle is working great but still haven’t stretched out the range yet. From the other reviews I have seen this shouldn’t be a problem. I went with the heaviest round i thought would still have a good muzzle velocity out of my TM. I am sure the 21 would be fine. This little slug will definitely do a number on tree rats and crows at longer range. :4:

Ok thanks Bigtin…maybe we will hear something from The Man Dan :biggrinn: ! How is your Taipan holding up? :4:

Mine is holding up great. Definitely my most accurate gun.

Hey BigTin and Dan,

How is the performance of this ammo with your rifels? I have a Taipan Veteran and I just purchased the 21gr hp in .22 and just wondering if either of you have your guns dialed in for best performance yet. Also, Dan, any particular reason you chose the 23gr slug over the 21gr? I’m ready to pop some squriels at longer ranges.

BG – I’ve never shot the ammo. I was interested in it when seeing the post and happened upon the information requested that’s all. Sorry I can’t help you.

How did you calculate the BC? Did you chrony it at muzzle and 50 yards?

The manufacturer lists it on his site
