It is a coil gun. He is using batteries to charge up one or more capacitors. He is using a steel projectile. When the gun is charged and then fired, the capacitors dump the stored electricity to a series of coils. The coils are energized in sequence. As each coil is energized, it sets up a magnetic field that pulls the steel projectile towards it. As the projectile nears the energized coil, it is shut off and the next one in line is energized. The steel projectile gets a bump in speed as each coil fires.

I have seen, on Future Weapons, some of the coil guns the military is working on. They had one that would shoot a 30 something pound chunk of steel at over 7,000fps! The show said that the M1A! Abrams main gun shoots around 5,000fps. IIRC a powder burning gun has an upper limit of just under 6,000fps.

It’s a Coilgun, read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coilgun

You can see how it made from youtube.

that to me looks like a “Rail Gun”…they use very powerful electro-magnets to propel the slug (alum or steel) at a high rate of speed…ive seen a few home made ones and this one looks the best…
