One piece gunpower talon stem/tophat
Hello all. I recently bought a gunpower one piece performance stem/tophat for my talon ss. Unfortunately, the unit is a bit longer than the factory AF stem and will not allow the breech to close when installed. I am able to place the stem in the valve and seat it with no problem, but then the breech bottoms out on the top hat before it can lock to the side. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

I sent a PM to MIcah about the tophat. I told him I’d refund him if he isn’t happy with it, but also recommended to him to let you turn it down.
If I get it back, I’d like to send it to you and have some “magic” done to it.

If you send it to me I will fix it for you. I will machine the ring on the tophat down.

Sounds like it is not that far off if it could be shimed. How many shims did it take to make it work?

Dyotat100’s right, you can file down the part of the stem that fits into the seat. He knows his stuff about valves, stems and top hats.
yes it would, but dont you think the wee bit needed could be compensated with a bit more preload?
what if there isn’t enough stem for the seat to grind off? it could be the valve stem it’s self is too long, then the whole thing would be unusable
That also shortens the hammer stroke though.
you can drill and tap a new hole a wee bit back in the breach to relocate the knob, that will allow you to run the one pice stem, if you do it right it will have a nice and tight lock as you put the knob to the side… just don’t drill too deep and it’ll be the perfect set up
The easiest way to fix it is pull the stem out and grind/sand a little of the end that goes into the seal. Determine how much needs to be removed and mark the stem so you know how far to go.
It is the one I purchased from you, Dave. I thought it would be a drop in and use stem, but oh well. I may just trash it and keep using the factory one. Thanks for the replies.

I had one and had a similar problem. I had to move the bottle collar back and I also tried using valve shims I got from Jim Gaska when I got an Etac from him.

Are you sure you have the stem seat completley in the valve?
