Opinions please for making a Condor a Coyote killer
Okay I know the debate of no replacement for displacement regarding using a powder burner but a fellow Condor owner has a .25 Condor sporting a 858cc custom tank (thanks Walter) but my buddy wants to deal with his Coyote problem with his Condor.
So he asked about converting his Condor to a 9mm or .308 but my question is if he modded his valve/bottle to shoot Jerry’s slugs or 43 grain Eun Jins would it be effective out to 75 yards?
Opinions please.
Thanks
Randy

Is he as smart as he looks? (see it in his eyes)
I recommend at least an 18″ barrel for shooting the slugs.
Thanks he is 60 lbs has a spotted tongue and weird stripping he will make a good hiking companion. 🙂

Good looking dog.
Thanks guys so here is my question can I adjust the tophat and use one of Tony’s heavy hammers to drive Jerrys slugs with a stock new style Condor valve?
Thanks guys
Randy
Here is my 14″ .25 Condor sporting a 858cc main tank plus my buddys .25 Condor I built for him.

Oh and my new 12 gauge pumper: 😈

Lastly (because I just felt like sharing) my 6 month old mixed breed rescue dog and yes he is getting big!

Mine is a choked 24″ LW. What part of central FL are you in?
I just put a 24″ .25cal barrel on my Condor…… Are all of you guys shooting Jerry’s slugs out of the “choked” /stock Walther (Airforce) barrels ????? I’m curious about trying these too?????? 😛
Randy / Bogman,
If you have occasion to take a shot at a yote at 75 yards, I think you can find a slug and set-up that will be accurate and powerful enough for the purpose.
These “ring” slugs were purpose designed for guys with .25 Condors that could develope power beyond what the available pellets could handle. At the time, Kodiaks were the king for accuracy and the Eun Jins were the king for power. It was easy to get the Kodiaks too fast, losing accuracy and the Eun Jins were hit and miss in the accuracy department with more miss than hit…
The reason for the thin rings was to be able to accept being shot from a choked barrel as we did not expect people to cut chokes off just for one slug choice. Yes, a proper barrel without a choke is better for slugs/bullets but cutting the barrel is a big step and we did not expect folks to do that. At least not until they got hooked on huge power!
The thin rings also minimize drag in the bore. Fewer rings could have cut drag more but most of these slugs are getting hand loaded directly into the rifling. There is room for error there and having multiple small contact bands makes a properly centered and seated slug more likely, and that makes an accurate shot more likely.
So, to post in this thread, I went back and looked at posts from years ago. I was looking for a picture I should have copied way back when and found a bunch of stuff. Besides Melloroadman’s getting all pissy about his POS swaged bullets getting laughed at, I also found a bunch of posts about the slugs shooting as or more accurate than the Kodiaks. That was a big deal for us at the time. We had set “gopher kill zone” at 50 as a design goal but we beat that according to customer experience…that was a good thing. Cast hunting slugs shooting as accurate as the premier pellet for the Condor!
Here’s some old info…

That is a 3 shot group Tofazfou shot at 100 yards with gen 2 7 rings. The splated slug at the top was shot at a different aimpoint than the 3 grouped together. a funny thing about the top splat is that it is fuzed into the heavy electricla box. It cracked the metal and started to penetrate, Ced had to pry that splat out! Anyhow, it is clear that those slugs fired at a yote’s body kill zone would all have hit in the zone and the splatting shows that penetration would not be a problem. BTW, we went to Gen 3 slugs after this test period for ease of production. The Gen 2 slugs worked great but sizing often produced the need for extra work on each slug, not good for volume work. The Gen 3s shoot as well but are easier to get out the door.

Knifemaker (hope he’s OK) recovered these slugs a couple years ago from 50 yard shots IIRC.

Also from Knifemaker… That’s the backside of a bit of waste from a kitchen counter top he shot at 50 yards.

Knife was having some accuracy issues shooting Kodiaks and the 6 and 7 ring slugs but shot this 9 ring group. He repeated the results and later went on to discover his issues with the lighter slugs and pellets. It was one of those things but the 9 rings apparently were not affected. I think the slugs are accurate enough in the intended guns…
BTW, Tofazfou’s barrel had the choke removed but Kifemaker’s barrel was a 21 and a half inch model that still had the choke.
Here are a few pictures of groups with the 70.6gr 7 rings out of my 24″ condor. 5 to 10 mile an hour crosswind. I did not test the speed on them, but in the past they were moving at a speed of 798 fps for a 100 fpe. That was with my powerwheel on 7 (the setting where I leave it at for the jsb kings…) Without messing with my tophat at all, I put the preload on 11 and fired a few groups. One group was at 50 yards. It was a 6 shot group. For whatever reason the 4th shot of the six went high. If not for that 4th “flyer” this would have been a 1″ group.

Then I moved on to 100 yards hoping to top my best group and I am happy to say that I did so today!
The first group was a five shot group. If not for the fifth shot in this group that would have been a four shot group under 2″ at 100 yards!

and now the pic of the “flyer”

This “flyer” made me decide to only go for a four shot group (the last group of the day). I was happy with this 2 1/8″ group as I believe it bested my last try by 3/4″. I am curious to see how much faster the extra preload gave me (if any). I always felt that I needed more fps for these 70 grainers at distance…I will check it when I get a chance.
The second group (three of the four were nearly MOA!)

Today’s time spent at the range merely reinforced a feeling I have had all along…I may buy and sell airguns all the time…but I am never selling my AAA .25 condor! That’s a fact! 😎
I have killed many coyotes and bobcats with a suppressed 22 Ruger handgun with chest shots, it had less power than the 70 grain Jerry’s slug in a Condor, plus it was a round nose, which is a poor stopper compared to a blunt nose.
You should be able to break a shoulder or the spine and pass thru the lungs and perhaps exit the other side with a 70 grainer in a Condor.
Coyotes move around a lot when you want to shoot them, a head shot is a iffy thing and increases your chance of a miss or a broken jaw, a risk magnified by hunting range mistakes and airguns with loopy trajectories, but the chest is center of mass and a much more stable target, if you put one thru his lungs he will most likely die. I say most likely, if you are unlucky enough to miss all blood vessels he will escape and heal up.
Be prepared to track with little or no blood trail, some will lay down and die on the spot with that windmill tail thing going on, some will jump around and yip, and others will beeline out to parts unknown. A high chest cavity shot would be the best option and try to break the spine or cut the dorsal artery that runs along the bottom of the spine.

i thought he used a 25,
i shoot the 32 grain at 980 with 1” accuracy this is about 75 to 80 foot pounds . penetrating a 2×4 at 25 yards, but have not taken any game with this.
The 22 would probably punch a hole , but its so small i would be afraid it would close up and not kill efficiently for a lung shot , head shot at under or about 50 i think would be fine but would pick the shot.
The 25 with a bigger wound channel ??????? , i was wondering what the penetration capabilities were. if you could double lung a coyote size critter i think it would be efficient enough, you wold not most likely recover the animal, but it would be dead.
i think that a 22 condor with 32 grain would drop a coyote with head shot at reasonable range . dont you guys.
Kimber has killed at least 3 yotes with 22 Condor and JSB Monsters (distance around 28-40 yards) – all top of the noggin shots. Not easy to do (at least for me), but it can be done.
Killing coyotes with body shots with small bore air rifles (i.e. 25 caliber shooting 100+ fpe) – It’s something I think many of us are interested in. I think it’s kind of like landing a big eye or blue fin tuna with light tackle.
What grain/type of Jerry’s slugs are you guys using?
What size groups are common at, say 50 yds?
Can an etac and regulator setup be used or does the regulator limit the output too much?
Thanks!
The 7 rings are 70.6 grains. When you first look at them the last thing that comes to your mind is “coefficient” 🙂 but………..they punch paper as clean as a poly mag and that’s a fact! I believe I had achieved 1.5″ groups at 50 with them…but I could be confused..I am getting old and I have CRS. I am heading out to the range today for the first time in a long time…so I will take some pics at 50 and 100.
Jds airman sells 4500 psi intake to 1,000 to 3000 output. You would need a CF tank, though. Not sure about the quality as I never owned one.
I’m looking to mod a Condor( .25) in this direction, too and have some questions:
What grain/type of Jerry’s slugs are you guys using?
What size groups are common at, say 50 yds?
Can an etac and regulator setup be used or does the regulator limit the output too much?
Thanks!

Yes, we have to really watch him as he is the most intelligent and easily trained dog I have owned in 30 years!
He was watching the kids going in their bedrooms and now opens the closed doors by pulling the door handles down and then takes their toys…..
