Ordered a chrony today
For the last 6 months I have put this off, there was always a barrel or a new tank or a scuba tank I needed. a month ago I was all set, but I ordered a etac and the Airarcher instead.
Like a boy in a toy store, I just had too much fun, and too many descisions. Or would that be a horney 1880’s lumberjack in a San Fransciso whore house? Either way, I am sure you get the point
I figured velocity by ear and with drop at different ranges with chairgun, my gun shot fine most of the time, but every newbie that wrote in with trouble, your answers were always the same.
“Get a chrony fool!” I will no longer grimace when I read that.
It has become only too aparent that it is like figuring your gas mileage with out a odometer.
“Well I get great mielage, I drive all week and only take 13 gallons a fillup!” How many times have we heard that from people?
Reading Lurkers’ post this week while he chases that sweet stop, finially convinced me to take the plunge.
I just got off the phone with Airgun Depoe, they give me great service and great responce, rather than never being able to get someone on the phone, and that takes a week to get the order out, but I will not mention PA. Plus it is faster and cheaper from Utah to Oregon.
I ordered the only model in stock, which was what I wanted after research. The Alpha red chrony.
I have an area that you have seen in my squirrel photos, to set it up on 4 foot grape bins and allows me to shoot 25 and 50 yards thru the screens.
Years ago I had a Pact 1 I think it was, I shot it too many times with whatever high handled AR 15 I was using at the time, hopefully I have learned better alignment. Time will tell.

My last chronograph had been shot so many times, I should have put a target on it, then I would have missed it for sure.
I had replaced the eyes several times.
THe readout display was remote, but it sure didn’t save the eyes.

THE best accessories I have bought so far are the led light system and the printer… No more ‘err’ readings from bad light and no more picking up a pen and writing the number and them loading the rifle and taking the next shot. I usually load with my left and so if I need to write something down I have to take both hands off the rifle…
I took my Chrony to the range to test some handloads for my pb and I couldn’t get the damn thing to work and since it’s 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off I had to wait 15 minutes before I could touch it again… There was good sunlight but the dammed thing wasn’t working! The led system works from a 12v battery of field work, I haven’t purchased the battery yet but so far indoors the leds have been dreamy. 😆
Oh and there are those that have shot their Chrony and those that are going to… 😕 😆 Doesn’t sound as catchy as the motorcycle one…

I wasn’t even gonna mention the part about shooting your chrony..hell, I’ve shot mine TWICE 😳 😳 😳 Luckily neither time damaged the sensors, so it stills works just fine…I cannot begin to explain just how STUPID I felt on both those occasions…jeeeeeezzzzzz!!!

Seems that I can get a cheaper fan than an Audi, Audi parts and service is so expensive, it is a four bolt and I will replace it with a metal fan.
Audi wants 500 for a radiator, same thing exactly on line is 331. and for 123. I can get an after market radiator designed for the allroad.
We have a Mexican, legal, that does a lot of the mechanical work on the vineyards, he will change it all out for 150.
It is when you have to get the computer plugged into these cars and decipher the german engineering that it gets difficult.
The fun thing about an Audi allroad is that it is a stationwagon that rides like a Mercedes, does 105 in the quarter, top speed of computer limited 135 or so and with a press of a button, you have four height levels, one like a porche and the top one up to a Dodge 3/4 ton 4×4. Being allwheel drive they are just about the perfect snow car. And what a road car they are.
All this depends on if they are working, Seems like they are like about a beautiful young woman, every month they are down for about 5 days and expensive as hell.
I filled it with water yesterday and ran it for about 5 minutes, to check for heat damage, and sure enough there is a radiator leak, but the good thing was that the motor was running smooth and quiet, and even with no fan blades it did not overheat, just leaked like a sieve. So I turned it around, pointed it at the shop and I am waiting for Monday when all the online used and discount Audi parts stores are open.
Haven’t got the chrony yet, fed express says on the 19th, been reading everything I can find on it, and your right Packrat about the manuel. I am going to try to get that off the Chrony internet site today.
You sure to learn to read pertinent material as you age don’t you.
On a side note, the guy I ordered the condor on co2 and I have been chatting with email a lot about other guns, he should recieve the payment on tuesday or wednesday and I hope to get the gun back here a week after that. He is working on a slick M4 type stock to fit on the 88 gram co2 AF conversions.

roachcreek also you car, if the damage is not to bad to the radiator i have successfully soldered the damage. just used some flux for pluming and a high melting temp solder. they also make solder for alum. but i did that to older cars that i did not care about. i am guessing yours is newer, and the trans, and engine oils are cooled by the radiator witch sucks hopefully all the fittings come off easy.
but i know your pain so many of my friends would buy oddball cars like that and i would remind them about parts and they always though they were cool cars until they need parts. like starters for 400 dollars. i love my ranger, cheap avalible parts.

if you are having that bad of day, do not use your crony, you will shoot it!!!! mine has a graze shot across the top but still works. i get scared at long distance with shooting mine so i put a piece of lexane in front of it. i imagine someone here will share some pics of shot up cronys.
Dang it man…Sounds like you had one of “THOSE DAYS” I am oh so familiar with those myself……At least ya got home with it..I’d have ended up getting stranded and would have to have called a wrecker and waited 2 hours for them to get there.. Hope you find the used parts you need…new parts stuff is just CRAZY !! I feel your pain bro’ !
Do yourself a favor, when you get your chrony….BEFORE you even take it out of the box….READ THE ENTIRE OWNER’S MANUAL…I capitalized that to emphasize just how important the manual is….the things Lurker listed are addressed in manual, but I was in too big a hurry to read that “junk”..It was only after “she who must be obeyed” read a soulution or 2 from said manual that I was forced to read it 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳

I had kept putting it off and if I had known how this day was going to go, I would have put if off for another month, but glad i did not.
I drove over to Bend today to get my Swavarski rangefinder from my son.
On the way home, my radiator fan let fly, put a blade thru my radiator on my Audi All road. Fuck those parts are high priced, so I am searching the web for a used radiator and fan.
So it looks like I ordered it just in time.
Luckily I made it to my dirve way as the light came on.

Roachcreek, I also have the red Alpha Chrony. It’s a great tool but can drive you nuts if you let it. Someone should keep a list of tips on using the Chrony. The manual is scanty and they don’t have a FAQ web site. They can answer your questions by email or phone but that really isn’t enough.
Here are a few tips that I have learned:
Blue sky or direct sunlight from an angle are your enemy.
…..If outdoors and the sun is even peaking at you, keep the
…..Chrony in the shade.
The white plastic sky screens are good if direct sun light isn’t shinning into the sensors. Overcast days are great.
If your FPS readings are way high, they are wrong.
If your FPS readings change or slow by 100 or more, maybe you moved and are now shooting at a slight angle across the chrony. I’ve seen 200 FPS lower readings and checked and I had moved a little sideways or, I often have several targets horizontally and when I change the angle to the other target it can lower the FPS.
Even the horizontal path can effect the speed, Keep the chrony aimed at the target.
The shot # disappears very quickly but you can play back the whole string manually. The optional printer is great if you remember to have both red lights on so it prints each shot. Otherwise somehow you can print the whole string with the calculations.
The LED Flashlight thing on the yellow didn’t work outdoors in sunlight for me. The spot of light is to small. I now have the Chrony LED light and it is two 6″ or so long red LEDs. It works great outdoors in the shade.
Put tape on the sky screen rods to indicate the shooting zone then make sure when you level the rifle you aren’t to high or low.
Don’t offer to Chrono someone’s powder burner. I now have speckled powder burns on the face of my Chrono from a 22 pistol.
That’s the same one I have…ABSOLUTELY cannot imagine not having a chrony, after owning one…I went ahead and got the printer too, though it is NOT a necessity, it sure makes it easier…plus, it can run on batteries as well, so you can take the whole set-up outdoors, to the range, over to your buddy’s house, whatever…CONGRATULATIONS I bet you love it!!!

If you decide to use it indoors, I have some pix of how I did the lights…total cost was like $8.00 at Lowe’s Hardware……Easy to do…let me know if you wanna see the pix….
Yep! It’s not a luxury with these guns. Just about as important as a powder scale to the reloader. 😉
