outdoor shooting range etiquette
Ok so i need input from everyone. I went out shooting on some land with some guys the other day. So its a nice day we all go set up targets at different ranges starting at 50 yards. As the day go’s on there is this black thing hanging from the tree out at about 70 yards so i draw down and hit it on my 2nd shot and it starts swinging in the tree. Feels great i hit a small hanging target out on the shooting range, (AGAIN OUT ON THE RANGE). So after i say i hit it one of the guys say, you did what!? and i say i hit the hanging target, turns out it was his handheld rangefinder hanging out there. At first i think and say no way, why would you put that on a range?? So we walk out there and sure as hell it is a range finder, no at 70 yards this looks like a black hanging target to me. Now he tells me i have to go buy him a bran new one. Im looking at it this way, why in the hell would you hang a range finder that looks like a hanging target out on a shooting range!!!! Am i missing something here or was this a really bad move on his part. I do not feel like i am to blame fully for this and don’t think i should have to cover the full cost of this, i really don’t think i should have to cover any of it because i still cant believe the thinking behind this stupid move but i want to put it out to everyone here and see what others have to say on the matter. I in no way shape or form knew it was a range finder and fully thought it was a hanging target. So whats your take on it, do i owe him a range finder, do i owe him half or should he not have hung it and he should have known better. I value the input of other shooters.

It sounds to me that he wanted it shot, that’s why he left it there……
