Yep, it cost a lot more, but carbide is just about all I use any more. It cuts so much faster,and I’m basically lazy and Impatient 😀 !

Mike, I’m just thankful that I don’t have to mill D2 or S7 or any Crucible Metal products. I have a tool holder (kennemetal) that I have to cut down as I like oversized tooling in my lathe so that I get the benefit of larger and stiffer tooling (hahahaha, he said ‘stiff tool’). but it won’t fit in my tool holder, so I have to take off a little bit off the shank… tried to use a HSS mill (5/8″ double ended bit) and it just dulled. Blah. Now I have to order a carbide bit just to cut down this one tool shank. AND get the 5/8″ mill sharpened. It’s older than I am. It’s one of the reasons I went so badly overbudget on the tool order this morning. Damn carbide is so expensive. But, the diamond grinding wheel should really help in the sharpening dept… at $90 for the wheel, it better. I’m dedicating one of the grinders to that wheel and making all the sharpending jigs to fit that one machine.

I know what you mean Walt. I have the same problem with carbide end mills. And no sharpening service anywhere around here.

Thanks, Lang. Interesting page. I have a Pit Bull sharpener which is still unmolested and in it’s original box. Got it from Sears years ago and threw it into the pile of stuff I have not had time to get to. I was going to mount it on a grinding wheel but have not had the chance… I’ll go look for it tonight.

Interesting, I had reached some of the same conclusions regarding angles of relief and blending on the flutes. Over the years I had long ago decided I could not consistently get the same relief angles each time, so I’ve been using a modified 2 facet system with good results. These guys went with a 4 facet system to account for more control over relief angle. Makes a lot of sense. I’ll go over it in more detail a little later. Also what they say about heat is one of the reasons I’m going with the expensive diamond wheel, it doesn’t heat the HSS to anywhere near the same temps due to how fast it cuts.

Adam, two reasons I don’t use the sharpening shops: 1) they are expensive when you have a drawer full of bits. 2) Any good machinist should be ashamed to be so skill-less that he cannot figure out how to sharpen his own drills. For something like a milling cutter, I can see where it may take specialty equipment or jigs to get all the flutes exactly the same; but for drills, I don’t want to throw in the towel so quickly and admit that I’d never cut it in a machine shop. And actually my drills have been working very well for me, after I made some very rudimentary jigs to use to help keep the angles correct.

Anyone with suggestions?

Take them to a sharpening shop. They will fix you up.
