pellet speed recommendations?
Shot some JSB Monsters, 25.39 gr. from the .22 condor (stock w/ Tony shroud) @ 2800 psi and pw 5/5: first three shots at 30 yds were grouped under 1/2 inch and the next three were off 3/4 inch in random directions. Got me wondering; what pellet speeds seem to group best with the Monsters and what speeds group best for Kodiak/’cudas (.22)?
Since I’m looking for a good chrony (any suggested vendors/models welcome), it would help to get some speed recommendations for these two pellets, say for 50 yard, tight groups. I’m trying not to loose track of the real, outside world while dealing with all the variables in these condors; it’s too easy to get sucked into endless experimentation. Maybe some speed recommendations will help keep me “grounded”. Maybe it’s too late! 😆
Once the preferred speeds are known, then I can mess around with TH, fill pressure, number of peak shots and eventually get around to making dinner… tomorrow.

Stick – You still shootin’ that old wore out Condor I sold you? 😉 Sent you a PM on your other purchase. Sorry for the delay. 😳
Moneyshot – Good call. I was wondering how I can tell if the top hat strikes the bonnet. Do you think some divers grease applied to the stem would work?
Bogman – Never shot the Monster’s. I’ve always shot the 18.1g in mine with the 24” barrel and the 12” barrel. May have to try them with the 24” but probably too heavy to get a decent shot string with the 12”.
I tried the ‘Cuda’s but could not get them too group well at 50 yards. Where I shoot and what I shoot I can’t get any closer. It’s too flat and open. :4:
My thoughts on pellet speed – 💡
My testing demostrates the general consensus on this and other forums that most quality pellets like an fps of 850-975-ish regardless of caliber and weight. There are exceptions to this as you will find and I will hear. However, it doesn’t hurt to test at higher fps to see how your groups come out.
My thoughts on a chrony – 💡
I agree with stick to a certain extent. I recently installed a .22 12” barrel in a Condor and thought I’d kinda guess at TH and PW settings and see what kind of groups I’d get without the aid of the chrony. I was able to get decent five to seven shot groups before I noticed the POI drop.
I made notes of my settings and went to the chrony. Started shooting 20 pellets to see what kind of shot string I was getting. The extreme spread (the fastest to the slowest pellet in the string) was like a water fall. If memory serves me correct, it was about 130fps. The standard deviation was equally terrible.
I got the chrony out. A hundred or so pellets later, I found that I needed to charge the bottle all the way up to 3K, set the PW at 7.5 and the TH at .070” and I started getting a little over 20 shots in the 950fps range (not too shabby) shooting the 18.1 JSB’s out of a 12” barrel. Typically, short barrels require a lot more air thus lowering the any lengthy shot string. Without the chrony, I would have never been able to determine this.
Hope this helps (somebody) 😀
