Pellet trap done
Finally had the motivation today to work on my silent pellet trap.
The dimensions for this contraption is 4ft high x 2 ft wide x 6inch deep.
I nailed the crib’s platform to the back of it. It is thicker than 1/4 inch plywood and feels a lot tougher. I then laid down thick floor mats that we used for the kitchen. On top of that I placed 1/4 inch plywood. the floor mat is absorb the shock if the pellet ever goes through the plywood.
I then placed 20 pieces of my son’s floor mat inside
I then created a border on top of the mats using 1inch by 1inch piece of wood from the crib. I placed metal mesh from the garden on top and drilled them into the border. This will keep all the foam inside. I drilled a screw on each side of the box so that I could tie a string across. clip for the piece of paper.
As I was putting stuff away in the shed, I saw an old all weather outdoor mat that we don’t use anymore and decided to drill that into the border as well.
The trap works really well. Hardly any noise from pellet impact.

I have only shot the .25 at 30 yards so far but it shoots through 3/4″ plywood backed up and air gapped with two more layers of 1/2″ osb and the pellets were stopping in the 2nd osb or the the 5/4 deck boards behind that every time. The 3/4″ ply never stopped a single pellet so don’t underestimate what you need. I will build a pellet trap and move to the warehouse at work where I have a 100 yards after the 1st.
I am really not that bad of a shot but just for safety reasons I like to make it wider. My neighbor to the right of me has 4 boys, they went into the conservation area and cleared a path back there and use it as hangout spot. Plus I have white vinyl fencing around the house and would hate for a stray to go through that thing. You are correct Syn, the back of my house opens up to a conservation area.
Once you get that thing sighted in there is no need for that much target real estate unless you have a serious case of the shakes or you’re legally blind (like Hoot). 😆
Seriously though, I have a piece of paper with 30 1″ targets and I shoot 10 shots groups at each one, benched of course.
Safety glasses are a MUST have, good point MG. Keep kids, wife and animals out of the shooting area.

All kidding around aside, you better wear safety glasses and keep the kid indoors. I suggest you make a larger backstop because you are bound to miss and from what I’ve seen of your home in pics that you’ve posted, you have surrounding homes to be concerned with. Get a few sheets of 3/4″ plywood and screw them together, then seal the end grain with cyanoacrylate and paint the boards to resist the elements. A 4 x 8 added backstop with multiple layers of 3/4″ plywood will slow down most misses. Just be careful.
well in that case your gonna need at least 25 bags to make a really big target. better get 3 sheets of plywood too
Well you’ve been shooting for a long time! I am a newbie, will need the 4ft by 2ft target in case I miss lol
I think my duct seal trap weighs about twice as much now then it did when it was first built. 😆
The nicest thing about a duct seal trap is it is small (mine is just larger than an 8 1/2″ x 11 piece of paper so I can shoot over my chrony in confined spaces.
That will work too. Plus you can shake out the lead and recycle it. With the duct seal the trap gets heavier and heavier as it collects the lead. You can get some of it out but at least half remains.

donny u need to make that a little deeper 10-12 inches, fill it with rubber mulch (i used 2 bags 5 bucks each) I shot 300 pellets in roughly the same whole point blank 50fpe and haven’t blown through yet (every 30 or so shots i shake it up a little)
Mine is the ole lades Hasic ( them things you put ur feet up on) took the lid off filled it full and put some cardboard on front
Two shots in the same place WILL go through a 2×4 given you are shooting at the 1 1/2″ thick section.
You need at least 2″ of duct seal and a 1/8″ to 1/4″ steel back to that trap.
You are correct Charlie. This .25 is a BEAST!! I stacked that foam in there pretty high, 1/4 plywood bunch of floor mats and a backing. After two shots in the same hole it went through, luckly it just went to the grass afterwards. My dad and I cut 2×4’s (5 pieces) and drilled them up and down the back. I doubt it will go through that. Next weekend I am going to replace the foam mats with rubber mulch.

Wow, That was beautifully made! I am not welder or machinist so I had to improvised. I went to and arm surplus store, bought a .50 ammo box for 12 dollars. It is quite big and deep. I carefully cut out the opening. I used the cut out piece for re-enforcement in the back. The filling, you can used duct seal and some old carpet. It sure wont win any beauty contest, but will do everything you want it to do.
Hey Donnie, the .25 Matador is not your ordinary grandfather air gun. It has some serious power. You may need to beef up your pellet trap, otherwise you may have to replace new fence or sheet rock ever fer weeks!

mine is a small piece of wood flooring ….. please don’t make fun on me… a poor man who lives in one the richest country in the world… a country that living on the oceans of oil and gas…. that nothing is existing here…

Damn Donny are you sighting in your grandpas shot gun or what? Just kidding nice job, I like seeing you tech guys build stuff! If you lived closer I would make you a trap out of steel or stainless for leaving outside, mine is 8″x8″ still holding up but not silent. Know you have me thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. p.s. just havin fun!
