Well at 64 years of age, I have been at it a while.

I still wear a piece of brass from an exploded 22 lr brass case in my right ear lobe.

I was in my early teens and taking 22 lr ammo apart and combining the powder from two shells to see what it would do for lonag range, mostly it just blew the extractors out of my Springfield auto rifle. But in the early spring I had 800 yards of dusty fresh plowed field prior to the grain sprouting to shoot at from the front porch. I learned fast the a 22 lr warning of one mile range was bullshit.

My father brought home a Lee loader for our 30 carbine and 30-30’s when I was 15, but the the store he got it from was out of powder, 3031, for the 30-30, but he had brought home some 2400 for the 30 carbine.

Not understanding at the time one powder from another I used a 30-30 scoop of 2400 for my first few days of 30-30 loads. I was amazed at how hard the Marlin 30-30 kicked and spun the 5 gallon milk can we had on a fence post 200 yards away. Lucky I did not do that stunt with our old 1906 Winchester 30-30 Mdl 94.

A couple years later I got a 788 in 22-250 and I was hooked, that would have ben around 1969 or so.

Anyway I love it.

For the 600 yard plus shot I get a zero at 100 yards to put me on my 280 yard gong, then use 280 yards as a zero for Handloads.com and get the drop in inches and divide by the range and I have the scope correction, usually that gets me on the mine tailing, if not I try a few shots holding under the tailing or over to get on.
