Q:

Pit Bike Engine’s – Manual or Semi Automatic

I’m going to be buying a CRF50 style pit bike engine (probably a lifan)…. but need help deciding if I should get semi auto or manual clutch.

I have no problem operating a regular motorcycle…. only issue is that this wont have a footbrake, so there would need to be two lever’s on the left handlebar for the rear brake and clutch if I went with a manual.

Because of that I would just say screw it and get the automatic, but because I’ve never had one I’m concerned its going to be too much of a compromise or there’s some idiosyncrasy I’m not aware of with the semi auto’s because I cant find much info on their operation.

It’s not that it wouldn’t have the footbrake, its that it wouldn’t be usable in my application (pedals get in the way).

Have you ever used a semi automatic engined dirt bike? Lose anything with it?

Gotcha… We have had plenty semi autos and the only thing is that it is
harder to pop a wheelie, and it can be a little hard to get rolling again if you
stop on a steep incline with an automatic… As far as ease of use, the
automatic has to get the nod…. They are putting 110cc motors on the 50cc
frames so I would opt for the larger motor…

I am a little confused on the foot brake thing YN…. I haven’t seen a manual
tranny bike without a foot brake… It is just Lifan that comes that way? I see
a CRF70 on ebay that has a manual tranny and it clearly has a foot brake in
the picture…. I can not really remember seeing a 50cc bike with a manual
tranny either… All of the ones I have seen are semi auto…
