Q:

Polished barrel?

So, I was doing some lite reading today and I came across a link ( http://www.seventyninedesign.com/shoot/Stealth/home.htm) in that link I was reading though the information I came across another idea submitted by the writer ( http://www.seventyninedesign.com/shoot/Stealth/barrel.htm) which started to make me wonder how good of an idea is it to polish the barrel? As well as what overall effects it would have on the gun?

I do also many times polish the interior, or bore of a barrel. Especially one that is going to shoot lead bullets. It really cuts down on leading. RC. or RoachCreek has posted extensively on the benefits of this in the .257. Getting many more accurate shoots before cleanings. 😉
When I firelaped my .257 barrel, it cut group sizes down by more than half! It would lead up with in 15 shots and go to hell, futher making tight groupes impossible. After firelapping, it will now easily go 50-60 with fine accuracy.

So yes, Posishing the BBl. Works well! :8: But as with all things, it helps to kinda know how to do it. RC posted this as well.

I do mirrow polish the breach arrea of all my AF barrels. It saves wear and tear on the “O” Rings, and helps the silicon grease stay put. 😀 But with the equipment I have here, it only takes 10 minutes or less for a full flawless mirrow. 😆

My opinion on this is the only way to know is shoot the gun before and after polishing the bore. I use a hawkeye bore scope on every gun I buy to see how the crown and chamber leade looks as well as to look for machining marks in the lands. Polishing the inside for sure makes a centerfire barrel easier to clean for me. My first af 25 barrel was junk and they replaced it. The replacement looked great.

No worries 😀

Lol ya or i could have read it for myself 😳 i just assumed it was about polishing the bore.

I’m sorry I should have included the fact that the person who wrote out the information polished the exterior of the barrel

Barrel polishing is a can of worms as far as if you should or should not and what the effect is. There will be just as many yes do it as no you ruin it answers. The closest i have come to polishing a barrel was using jb bore paste on a bushmaster varminter during barrel break in and i dont know if it did anything because i did it right from the start when it was new and while i was breaking in the barrel. That gun was amazingly accurate for a production gun and i got groups at 300 yds with 5 shots measuring .920 ctc with loads i tailored to that gun. I personally think that done correctly polishing the bore can be a positive thing if the barrel needs it.
