Q:

Polishing an AG barrel ??

Do or don´t ?? Well – i do but then again i´m a bit weird in that regard : When someone says “Don´t” i most definitely do .
Anyways – i like to polish my firearm barrels every now and then and i´ve NEVER – not once – had any negative side effects of that. There´s this old wifes tale saying you shouldn´t polish an AG barrel since “those barrels are made of mild steel” and will wear out fast. Bullshit i say !
Why should an LW barrel made for AG – or any other marquee barrel – be of a inferior or so soft material it wouldn´t handle the “rigors” of polishin if needed. Anyone with a good,educated,non-theorical answer to this age old question ?? I just had an arguement with one Mr. Know-It-All (no,not Dr. Evil) about the subject. That dumbass says it´s the worse thing i could do to my barrel…

P.S I´ve just finished the Cricket barrel polish (after the first 700 or so rounds and it was SHITTY) and i bet once “seasoned” it´ll shoot at least as good as before the no-no – if not better. And it´ll take a bit longer time before it gets all leaded up again. And it´ll be a bit easier to clean for a good while until it needs to be polished again.

But it has! Twice. The first time was a pain in the ass since it ricochetted from my eyeball and flew outta window. Then the Dog thought it was a some kind of a Toy and ran around with it before he got tired and buried it in the backyard. Needless to say when i finally found it it was dirty so i had to polish it again…. Tough job but somebody’s got to do it…

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2. This POS iPhone sucks though …

Only you would know that truth so well!!!

I’m surprised your knob hasn’t “popped off” and hit you in the eye.

Wise words indeed .. :6:

Polishing ones knob is all good and fun but we would like to see how it shoots, I mean the gun. No videos of the the other thing please, we all know how slow work it is to polish a metal knob and will get bored.

Already did ! And what a shiny knob it is.

Ernest- please post a pic of a barrel crown, I would like to see what it looks like

Thanks

If you ask nicely…Sir Ville will send you a picture of him polishing his knob!

Hoot:

Hoot, It’s so easy, even I can do it! :biggrinn:

Mater, It looks a lot like the one the Gal over in England wears on occasion. Kinda pretty with jewels on top. But a bit over the top for us really. 😉

Ernest – i think that naked barrel looks superb! Do you have any clear coating on it or you just take good care and look after it by oiling and even occationally re-polishing it ??
Is there any real world benefits to be found with that TP alternation/mod on a .25 cal ?? I was under the impression it was only needed on a .22 to align the TP correctly in order to get the most FPE outta it.

I really like the attention to detail on all your rifles. Really nice work !

Ernest does some righteous shit…of that there is no doubt.

I’ve noticed my lead-in to the Edgun .25 Long barrel is a bit tight and was wondering if such polishing might smooth my loading? Certainly couldn’t hurt…I just don’t like having to push the bolt that hard to seat a slightly larger sized pellets. The Crosman .25 pellets slide in fine, but Barracuda’s take a definite push for that last 1/4″ or so, same with cast lead slugs of .25 caliber.

Or…should I send my barrel off to a machinist to have it lapped, licked, fire-baked, or whatever the hell they do to permit easier loading?

Ignorant, but inquiring minds, wish to know….

A few years ago I sent an AF barrel to Jim Gaska, an excellent machinist himself, to custom cut/crown for me and that lead in came back tapered and so smooth that the .25 caliber pellet damn near loaded itself!

A little advice here???

Kindly…but easily confused,

PS: Urgirl….ain’t it the shits! But it’s still the best game in town, although Kalibrgun is coming on strong! I’m worried about all those moving parts in the Cricket/Grackle-bird they have coming out in semi-auto. I don’t trust moving parts…never have! Everything I ever owned with moving parts eventually caused me grief…that includes my wife and my own body.

Dearest Uncle Hoot: ; I may be totally wrong about this but if that Gaska-guy did such good job on your barrel back in the day , you should consider this bold move : Send your damn Barrel to him again !

These “HOOT” – smilies were a stroke of Genius !!! No more that very much energy consuming “type capital H, then click that Owl-looking smiley twice and then type a capital T ” ever again. Now that Hoot: trade mark is just a click away. Thank you Pandemic !

I saw a picture somewhere of the guts of that Hummingbird action and it looked a little like the new fusion reactor the government built that was in the Star Trek movie – scary. 😯 I am glad that thing is on the west coast. :biggrinn:

Angle porting and enlarging the clearance around the valve stem and shaping it like a nozzle and enlarging the TP on the action is the only way the .25 to shot 75+ fpe and 50+fpe on .22. I use the alignment screw to aligned the TP.

I only put a light coating of oil on the polish naked barrel only once in 3 months and no sign of rusting. its always a pleasure to look at! :biggrinn:

That´s not good. Now i need to strip and polish my Barrel … :winkn:

I´m in no need to get +75 FPE out of my Bug so i´ll let well enough alone. How many shots do you get out of yours in that power anyway ??

So it’s ok to have a $2000 gun sit in a bag and not being able to use it because it’s the mystique of the edgun brand to have to wait for parts???..

I didn’t read that when I ordered my gun!….

It´s Mystique, allright … :3:
