Q:

Possible Small group shoot

So this last Sunday I got a chance to shoot in a new location where the property manager needs the ground squirrel population controlled as not only does the property have orange trees and avocados trees, its also the compost dump location for property owners restaurant. So as you can imagine the GS population is exploding and Dan the property manager is more than happy to let me come shoot. While by no means leisure shooting as your under the sun all day, the rattle snakes are everywhere and terrain can be very unforgiving if you don’t watch your step, its a shooters paradise with good backdrops and lots of opportunities for long-range shots. I’m planning on going again Thursday and will be inquiring as to the possibility of me bringing other shooters alone to help with population control. If I get the go ahead to do this, who among you foul mouthed bastards 😉 would like to join me? The only real limitations I would have to insist on would be that ALL PCPs would need to be shrouded as the location is in a canyon so muzzle report could carry to the one or two homes within eyeshot. Also I would think that 2 guests at a time would have to be the limit as I don’t want Dan to be overwhelmed with groups of people walking around shooting everything in sight. 😉 Also the days that I’m permitted to shoot so far (until Dan gives me a key to the access road) are Tues, Thurs and Sun with Sunday being the most likely candidate for group shoots. Location is in Fallbrook up in the De Luz/Sandia Creek area. So if this is something some of you would want to do let me know and if I get the go ahead I will contact you and see if your available for the next time I go.

Sorry I missed where you said 5 ft….yeah that would have been a huge mojave at 5ft!

Red DB or Red Diamond ( crotalus ruber) but fairly certain DB, if it had been a mojave that size I would have kept it as it would have been an abnormally large mojave. I’ll take a pic of the head when I go back out (drying).

How big? I couldn’t tell from the pic view from my phone. Just the other day my wife called me saying there’s a snake in the road (she was on her way to pick up my son from practice) so I road my bike to see…turned out to be a gopher…approx 4ft long. It seemed dead but no visible wounds…so I carefully pick it up and I could feel a subtle movement of its muscles. I was walking my bike back with the snake in hand and she pulls up and asks, “did you see the snake?” So I say oh this one (holding up the snake). The look on her face…..priceless! I tried to revive it by putting it in an old tank with a heater…saw it moving and thought it would be ready to go by morning. Sadly it didn’t survive. I placed it in an open field next to the house….made some hawk or owl happy….or a cat?

Mojave or Red DB? I was watching some show about the infestation of burmese pythons in the south east. Seems like the next Swamp people should have people who hunt them….they make nice boots and wallets. I could easily put a JSB from 35-50 yards right between a burmese python’ s eyes. I like snakes but if it’s as bad as they say I wouldn’t mind.

i heard the small ones are more dangerous than the big ones, they will inject a full dose of venom, either way i dont like snakes, except on a pair of boots or a nice belt! 😀
I might get one of those BSAs, they seem pretty good.

While very true I find the small ones tend to get out of your way and the big ones stand their ground.

For years I’ve caught and kept rattlesnakes so I’ve always tried to avoid killing them but this one was on the large side at almost 5 ft and the property manager brings his kids out on occasion so risk outweighed my personal feelings.
The family friend that arranged everything as far as getting the initial permission to shoot there was with me yesterday and actually almost stepped on the rattler as it was still early and he wasn’t in the mood to give us a heads up I only JUST noticed him and if it wasn’t for the fact that I knew the general area he was hanging out and the fact we where actively looking for him I probably would have missed him completely. Besides that and the actual killing and skinning the day was fairly uneventful, we’ve had some rain down here for the last couple days so the GS weren’t overly active but still managed to get 11 all at 65yds as I focus my attention on the compost pile. I’m really liking this BSA FFP scope if you watched the vid above its very clear and loving the reticle (so much I have 2 more brand new ones still in the box waiting for me to buy new rifles).
