Q:

Pulsar N550 – Dr Bobs Adapter

Chancers,

I received all my components and set it up this evening. The fit is tight but, you need to tighten the four screws for it to feel securely and not move. The problem is it changed the point of impact and after adjusting it for an hour I couldn’t get it lined up with the original point of impact. It’s lined up perfectly horizontally, but I can’t get it line up vertically. It shoots low, I’m going to contact Dr Bob to see if this is normal. Since it lines up horizontally, I just have to re-align it vertically which is super easy with this scope. I decided not to go with the Sony 1.7 or the Pulsar 1.7 telephoto add on lens, I wanted more magnification than either lens offered, so I went with a photography doubler at 2.0. Now here is the trade off, I can’t focus at 20 yards and under, there is not enough travel adjustment on the scope at this range. When I tried at 30 yards, I was able to focus to a clear picture, but the picture did get grainer, but very usable. Now if I can solve the point of impact issue that would make this upgrade a 9 out of 10.

Ig720, let me know how it works with your Sony lens.

I purchased the Sony Lens and I can report it doesn’t change the Point of Impact. Focusing and clarity is much better than the high quality 2X telephoto photo lens that is pictured in the posting. The Sony Lens is the way to go if you plan on using the Dr Bobs adapter. It doesn’t look as cool as the photo doubler, but it’s much better.

I guess I spoke too soon, I nailed three squirrels today after the missing the two earlier. Plus I popped this one.

Jury still out at night with the adjustments (focus, contrast and brightness).

Well, I couldn’t solve the POI issue, so readjusted/sighted the scope to the new POI and I would say the results were mixed. After getting the scope sighted in on one inch circle rimfire targets (25 meter British Rimfire Targets) at 34 yards, I thought I was set, but after trying to hit a couple of squirrels, I missed everyone (they weren’t moving and standing straight up feeding on corn). Last night another yote came by, but with the new lens the adjustments like contrast, brightness and focus didn’t work as quickly and wasn’t able to take a shot at 38 yards. Now it seems more trouble than it’s worth. Could it be the doubler lens? It was rated for IR lighting and glass was supposed to be better than the Pulsar Lens. I’ll wait for Ig720 to get the Sony Lens and see if his results are better. If not…look for the adapter to be on sale in a week or so.

Maybe on my 10 year wedding anniversary I can ask for a 6X ATN Thor or the cheaper ATN P-22.

Hey kimber20,
I agree with you on it not being a big deal on focusing under 20 yards if one has a laser. I too have one and its zero is set for 10 yrds. I use it for the close up stuff and the scope for anything further down range. I also bought the laser for night shooting and I specifically bought a red laser to be a little more stealth. THe green lasers are good in the day, but at night, the entire laser path is visible!

The red laser won’t show up as well long distance in the daytime, but I bought it for night shooting and close range daytime shooting only. It’s better to spend a little more on a decent one and avoid the cheapies! Of course windage and elevation adjustments are a must for accuracy. I just thought I would mention this for anyone new to lasers. I know with all you hardened vets this is common knowledge.

Hey Chancers,

I have a Tri-Rail on my Condor and the mounts are usually Dovetail, but with the Tri-Rail, the second level from the Dovetail is very close to a Weaver mount (in width). On the Pulsar mount I took off the rail that usually secures the mount (under the clamping bracket on the Pulsar, there was this rail I removed) to a Weaver and it fits really tight and it’s rock solid. I can pick up the whole set-up by the scope and it holds firm. Because finding a good Dovetail to Weaver mount has been frustrating, I ordered some from Amazon and they wouldn’t clamp tight on the Dovetail mount on the rail (It was B-Square brand), so after that failed experiment I decided to try to clamp directly to the Tri-Rail and it worked! I know Air Force now sells Dovetail to Weaver mounts, but they are $35 each.

The magnification is now 9.0X which is what I’m comfortable with. There is that issue that it can’t focus under 20 yards, but it’s not a big deal for me. I use the laser at that range. I have to admit the laser has been a cool device, I can hold the rife in odd positions and still get a solid hold and not worry about looking through a scope or sights. Once I shot a squirrel at 10 yards holding the rife at my waist because of the angle and I watched my shot nail him right in the head, it’s was pretty cool and now believe the laser is essential for everyone. Plus you can use it to help aid in sighting any scope you plan to mount.

Wow, you’re getting a TT Condor, that’s going to be a sledgehammer! I would like my Condor to get tuned by Tony and some mods, but those are going to have to wait. My wife wold kill me if I spent more funds on this hobby of mine.

Unfortunately I haven’t even started that process. I would like to see if I can record to my Smartphone and upload the files to my computer, but given the N550 only has a composite out, I would need to find a converter (maybe some member has tackled this problem?….it will save me time to research it).
Dr Bob got back to me today and stated that the adapter with the Sony Lens 1.7X wouldn’t have a point of impact issue (he stated it’s really forgiving on this). He believes that my add-on lens is not perfectly square to my object lens and it’s causing a parallax error. He stated that there is no harm to the scope and just re-adjust to compensate the difference. The only problem is if I want to use the scope without the doubler, I would have to remember the adjustments made. Well it’s not too horrible, since it’s lined up perfectly horizontally, so I just have to adjust up (remembering the number of clicks should be easy or I’ll keep it in my Smartphone).
I’ll try to re-seat it, but it snapped in and there is really no adjusting the adapter and the step-up ring and Doubler are seated super tight (this thing isn’t moving). Will give update later tonight.

Looks real neat. Is the mag now 9.0x? Once you get the vertical issue worked out, this is gonna be a kickass setup. Tony should be finishing up my AAA Condor this week.

Unrelated question. Your Pulsar mounts directly on the rail? Is the rail a Weaver or dovetail? Are the standard rails on the Condors weaver or dovetails?

Nice setup. I hope you get the vertical issue worked out, because that’s just too d@mn sweet to be taking it off. Good luck and may the force be with you! 😉
