Pumps

I was just thinking about this for a while now and although I do not have any experience with this and this might just be me blowing wind outa my arse, but all the pumps seem to be a stupid design based on something made for pumping up bicycle wheels to a few bar not a few hundred bar.
Wouldn’t it make sense to use some kind of vertical pump with a hinged handle to get some leverage power and make the pumping easier? Same principle as a spring gun sorta kinda.
