Q:

QB78 based .30 PCP

So, as most of you guys know, I’m a glutton for punishment… I would like to build a QB78 based PCP, like a corsair. But this one would be a .30 using a TJ airgun .30 barrel. Now here’s a question: how long of a barrel should I use? Of course, the length of the reservoir is relative to the barrel. I’m looking for an efficient barrel length. Mostly for longer range target shooting, though I would like to take small game (woodchuck at the largest) if the opportunity presents itself. Target number of shots would be around 5-6 full power shots. Not sure of a target fpe, but seeing as how FX’s .30 is 75 fpe, I think 75+ is where I should target it. Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns?

I wouldn’t buy anything from the swindler. Over priced and disappears after the sale.

Bam would be the way to go. Doesn’t take to much to shoot .30 pellets. If you want to shoot cast stick with the condor.

You could consider the BAM / XISICO B50 or B51 as well.

I have seen a lot of highpower bigbore slug/solid shooting conversions based on this airgun in Holland.

I think its a better startingpoint for conversions than the QB78.
Better construction, better triggergroup and both the stock airtube and valve* are usable for your purposes.

* With some proper valve modifications you can get very decent power out of it.

Both of you bring up good points… Even Cedric likes to tether his Corsair, due to the tiny reservoir- think about it: it’s the same size as the disco. I don’t know why a QB base is so appealing… I’m going to have to do some digging with the M-10… Looks interesting. At the very least I’ll have to mod the bolt, pellet tray and the barrel band. Wingman, would you happen to know what the factory M-10 barrel O.D. is?

If I recall correctly, a lot of the early (past 20 years or so) custom big bores were built on the QB78. If I also recall correctly, many of them had serious issues. I am not saying that you cannot do it, but you would likely be better off starting with something else.

There’s mine. It is not even worth two cents in today’s currency exchange rate.

I don’t know too much about the M-10, and the cost of a base rifle is $650. Base cost of a QB is only $99. If I plan it out right, and watch what I spend, I might be able to get a QB modded to shoot .30 JSB for under $700. I’m just thinking out loud. I have no idea what a QB pcp would really cost.

20-22″ is plenty long enough for .30cal JSB pellets unless you want to shoot cast bullets over about 130gr where a bit more velocity is required go for 24-26″.
Why build on a crappy QB though? You will have a far better power plant, valve and air volume with the likes of a SPA M10.. You will spend just as much on modding a QB to a .30cal with loads of custom parts as you would just buying a M10, opening up the valve and fitting a .30cal barrel..
