Quackenbush .457 Outlaw
I have lately been interested in big bore air rifles for hunting. This gun has been on my list for a few years now of air guns to buy and I’ve never owned a big bore before. Would anybody recommended this gun?
I plan on hunting deer, wild boar, and anything else I can find! I know Dennis is very reliable and been in this game for years, but I’m still not completely convinced this gun would be effective and humane enough for deer hunting. But I do plan on buying one and trying it out, even though I might have to wait 8 months or more to get one because hes all backed up with the orders.

RC,
I was shooting the Yukon .62 for the second tree kill and that group at 100. The Yukon is a rifled .62 making more than 700fpe as it was shot that weekend (I’m looking at a 700gr slug as I think I’m wasting some air in the present tune that could be put to use…).
The smoothbore you were probably thinking of is the .62 Woodsman. That’s a great gun but far less powerful at about 450 fpe. That gun is very accurate for a smoothy and hitting critters at 75 yards is no problem… it won’t shoot groups under 2″ at 100 yards though. With the .32 rifled insert, it shoots under an inch at thet range and sometimes, under 1/2″.
Jerry,
That is some serious power. If you don’t hit the elk you fall a tree on him.
Now that is a smooth bore if I remember correctly?
What FPE is it producing?

Marvin,
You are absolutely correct, people can lie and cheat and photoshop all day long. They usually get caught though and we can generally figure out who’s full of crap and who isn’t. Most guys that are full of it think we’re all as dumb as they are and make it pretty obvious.
I do not own a DAQ nor do I want one . I just want to shied some light on this . And I have my fire suite on . I understand to a degree why some want pictures . But a picture is no more proof that what is being said is truth than the one saying it . With a good photo shop any target can be made over to look like any thing you want it to look like . One can say it is 50 or 100 yards and for all we know it is feet not yards . Marvin
Nice shooting and nice guns Jerry!!!
It is always amusing to hear the fantastic stories of accuracy and other supposedly heroic performance of certain guns. Usually, the new owners don’t have cameras, don’t know hot to post a picture or just figure that stories about other people’s guns or stuff they shot way back when (the camera batteries were always dead) somehow convince anyone who is serious that their new gun or wanted gun is awesome!
I’ve been around too long to be fooled by BS from fanbois and selected and manipulated information from writers and members of the “club.”
Once upon a time, I wanted a DAQ to add to my collection. Knowing what I know now… no thanks.
Like Butcher mentioned, why are pictures of DAQ groups as rare as hen’s teeth? I’ve seen more Ranger groups here than all the DAQ .45s I can remember anywhere else! I guess the Ranger comes with a how to post a picture card?
BTW, I went shooting a couple weekends ago, I caught a couple pictures… http://www.airgunrendezvous.com/rendezvous/read.php?2,11702
McVey tuned it and according to him, all the .457 LA Outlaws he’s tuned, max out aboutthe same at around 580fpe. That’s all he can get from them, but he increased the shot count from 2 to 5 with the first 3 more powerful than the gun came stock.
It shoots great and deadly accurate inside 50-60 yards.
Please post some 50 yard groups!
Did Dan improve on the rifles accuracy when he tuned it, or was it always accurate? That is a HUGE improvement on shot count……Dan sure knows what he is doing!
Yep ol Dan has some magical calculations that he does on these valve return and hammer springs that others are simply baffled by , the crazy thing is how many shots that ranger gets on low , med power with 141-250 g stuff ! you tether up to a 44cf tank and man you talk about shooting fun ,
one time i worked my way from 4500 psi teathered up i just shot the hell out of the gun going from heavy stuff on high power , to mid power shooting 141- 250 g stuff at over 1000fps , then when the tank hit aroud 3000 psi i switched to low power and was shooting 250 grain bullets at over 900 fps -940 to start with , 1070 fps on the round ball , i just lit the place up with lead firing at will [ a lot of shots as fast as i could load]all of a sudden i blasted one through the prochrono cause i thought my roundball i was shooting was dropping a little bit it read 670 , i looked at the guage it only had about 800 psi or so on it HA ! HA ! I was amazed ! 😆 my box of round ball was all but done ! plus who knows how many 250 g bullets i took out of the 500 count box ! 😉

The key word there is “had”.
After the tune it would group inside 1-1/2″ with the first 3 shots at 50 yards.
I was using a 270 grain and when new it would shoot with a 3600 psi fill, 1st shot about 900-910 fps, 2nd shot would drop to about 850 fps. There was such a drop it was tough to group them within 3-4 inches. After Dan got done same bullet same pressure it would shoot 990, 945, 910, 880, 840. Those first 3 shots would group pretty well, and I believe Dan re-crowned the barrel during the tune.
The new owner is in Arizona.

You came to the right forum (believe it or not, the TAG has the most integrity) with your question, as you would be hard-pressed to find a .45 DAQ with accuracy that is comparable to a Sam Yang, or XP Ranger. I haven’t seen one yet.
Judging from my personal experience, the following would likely be censored on another forum so be aware. DAQ is considered a god there by the ignorant, and is allowed to do/say whatever he pleases whether he is bearing false witness, or not (the only active moderator there is his personal friend, and guardian angel). There’s proof of that, too.
DAQ’s barrels seem to be a “hit and miss” proposition (pun intended). Whereas .45Ranger owners appear to have a hard time finding a boolit that WON’T shoot very well.
I feel this way because of my limited personal experience hunting with people using DAQ rifles, along with my having posted requests for bigbore airgun 50 yard groups several times over the last few years on the forums where the DAQ owners hang out most (though Tofazfou always came thru with his rubbed-on bigbores). These accuracy report requests went largely un-answered until the Corsair, and Ranger came along.
I don’t recall EVER seeing a dead-nuts accurate group posted by a .457/.458 DAQ owner. I have seen a couple DAQ .308’s reported to be somewhat accurate so maybe you would have better luck with that caliber. If you do wind-up getting a .45 DAQ that doesn’t shoot worth a hill of beans, consider getting a quality barrel to swap onto it.
I feel the Ranger design is much safer than the DAQ……the loading lever on my friends’ DAQ (newer design a few years ago) was pretty FLIMSY, and would lift out of the slot with the slightest pressure. Coming into contact with brush on a stalk could have lifted the lever out of it’s place without you knowing it. I believe DAQ calls this “operator error” (a response I would expect from someone like DAQ)…I call it a design flaw.
Somehow the loading lever came out of it’s slot right before my friend put a shot on a deer…….knocked his ass backwards from a kneeling position (my friend, not the deer), airblast blowing his hat off and all. Kinda stunned him, but luckily he wasn’t hurt (probably weakened the rifles’ action, though).
I think he is lucky in that he wasn’t using one of the older DAQ designs with the exposed bolt (design was likely changed for just this reason) that you see for sale on the Yellow from time to time. I have heard a horror story or two about those exposed bolts, so avoid them like the plaque.
A TUNED SamYang is a lot of fun, accurate, and is fairly light/compact when compared to other bigbores on the market (21.6 inch barrel). Look into the .308/.357 Corsair as well, with the low fill pressure set-up. The Ranger is the ultimate judging from all reports thus far.
I’ve had a tuned .DAQ .457

GO BIG …OR GO HOME ! 😆 buy the ranger 45 mine is pulling numbers in the 750 fpe range , and i have not tried the 540 grain stuff which will drive it up over 800 with the 36inch barrel this monster will take bambi out at 100-150 yards if needed , if ya just want to plink away it will do that also , shooting 141 grain round ball mid power i did a string that started out at 1150fps 9 shots later it wasl still hitting 877 fps ! the gun is a bit loud i guess , but now after shooting with a bunch of guys with regular powder burning fire arms it’s not loud at all compared to those
you will not find a better big bore on the market for the price and power , and the materials it is made out of ,everything is cnc machined on this gun, 4130 chromoly air tubed /barreled /7075 billet alloy / i have reserched every dam one of them , no one cnc’s all the parts like xp does , call Dan Mcvey xp airguns get on his list for a 36inch barrel ,

Cam,
There are several new models of the 909’s that just came out. If you get them modded, they are perfectly capable of what you want to do and to do it with the equipment you have.
And on a plus side, I have never heard of a 909 that was not spledidly accurate. On the Yellow, you see them in the 400 dollar range often that are almost new and sometimes modded..
Tof and Jerry are correct, go within your budget, this endeavor is very expensive.

Cam,
Just now meeting RC and DAN H but i can say they are fine guys and i know RC has a ton of hunting experience that i might not ever get the chance to get. I WANT HIS COYOTE SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE…LOL Seriously.
But i know that Jerry and i have been around for a long time on the forums and weve handled, and tuned, and casted bullets for, and shot a lot of airguns. Nothing wrong with wanting a DAQ. And i agree with everything that Jerry has said. You don’t need a DAQ or DAN MACVEY or whatever if money is the issue. There are guns like the 909 series and the NEW 909s that can easily take white tail deer and hogs. Its been done and done on video and tv. The evolution of big bores are gonna start going toward higher fill pressures and such therefore making more power and speed. There will still be lower fill airguns like the Korean guns and such plus some of the customs. But my advise is this, save your money to get what you want. DO NOT RUSH into it. DO your homework/research by going to various websites to make sure you get the gun you deserve and don’t be scared to ask questions. You will find an answer.
The one thing i can say about DAN MACVEY or guys like GARY BARNES is, if you have a problem with your product, you will get answers and you will get service. I’ve dealt and talked with them on numerous occasions and customer service is a NECESSITY when you get into airguns. Things break, things leak (not all the time)…etc…etc…etc. Not saying anything negative about DAQ, i simply have no experience talking to him nor have i every owned his guns.
But get what you want, and share your experiences.

I remember a few on here that trashed the rangers trigger set up ,and have now been proven totally 100 percent wrong ! 😉 😆 about what they had posted , about a gun they never shot 😆 now that i have pulled that trigger over 400 times i know it is spot on , you can not tell when it is going to go off , unless you know how far the pull is set ,
i had 2 other guys this weekend shoot the gun that are in the military they shoot just about everything ,and were preparing to go to Afghanistan shooting all there guns up on Larch MT in Vancouver Washington where i go shooting ,
both of these guys were very impressed at every aspect of the ranger airgun especially the power it made ,{ they both shot Charlies over 400 grain bullet on high power } and the trigger pull , one of the guys showed me the pull on a couple of his guns that the triggers had been moded , and then told me who ever set/designed that trigger set up knows what the hell they are doing , i took the stock off the gun to show them , both were impressed how the gun had the power settings built into the gun with the cnc allen set up , and noted due to the amount of contact area being rounded on the CNC machined allens that it spread out the load , which made it perfect smooth with no catching hard spots at all when you pull the trigger .
so some times the guys that have been around a while that think they know every -thing come up a bit short ! 😉 HA ! HA ! 😆……. i just couldn’t resist 😆
