Q:

Question about using a HPA paintball tank to top up?

I have a buddy that has a CF HPA 88/4500psi paintball tank with a regulator set for paintball use.

I’m thinking about getting it and use it to top up my air rifle while in the field hunting and plinking instead of lugging my heavy 120/3500psi scuba tank around.

My start fill on my air rifle is 2800psi and generally refill at 2100 psi to maintain peak power and shot count.

I know with such a small tank that the number of refills will be 1-2 maybe 3 top ups but that’s ok… So is there a way, if possible, to use that paintball tank as a portable refill tank? Can I just attach a hose to it and simply refill or will the regulator prevent that from happening.

Thanks

Haha. It is a good one.

Ok, sounds good to me.

Best to leave them alone and get another small tank

If the max output of the reg is 850 psi. You will never be able to fill past 850 psi from that tank to your gun.

That’s what I thought… so can and is it safe to mod the reg so the psi is higher or just making it a valve? Similar to a co2 tank valve?

As can read my knowledge on regs is very limited.

I know I can simpley buy a 13 cu ft 3000psi scuba tank but new cost about $120 plus taxes and a used one is hard to find.

The tank your buddy has probably has the regulator preset to 450 or 850 psi.

Correct but I’m not shooting from it, just want to use it as a portable fill station and I’m not sure if that reg will prevent me from fill to 2800 psi.
