Questions.

In the search for ultimate power…

I’ve produced a few valves now, the most powerful of which was able to give a .22 21-grain pellet 1150fps with a Blod spring and 22mm of spacers behind a 100g hammer and a fill of 3000psi through a 24″ barrel. My current valve gives a max of 1050fps with all the above the same except for needing 30mm of spacers. With 10mm of spacer the best I can get is 750fps.

On the Condor with it’s power-wheel, could somebody please tell me what the wheel-settings equate to in terms of spacers at both it’s lowest and highest settings? And also some fps numbers with 21-grain pellets would be helpful.

The last question…does the air-volume in the components between the tank and the breech affect performance appreciably? In other words, which gives best performance, a low-volume stem or a high-volume stem? That also affects the weight of the stem, which I’m thinking may also be hindering performance. The longer the stem the greater it’s mass and volume.

Any insights will be gratefully received. 😀

If you look at the pics of the ones he has been making they are quite a bit different than Airforce. I dont think the Airforce valve was ever meant to be able to remove the top hat/stem while the bottle was charged with air. It does on a few guns but only because they have a crappy valve.

With numbers like this I have to ask what is the reason for making a valve that is no better than the current OEM Condor valve?
The new condor valve makes great power with a 90 gram hammer and no spacing up (well the power wheel I spose does that)

So you do indeed have some rethink to do eh?

The reason Im making it is for it’s pull-on/pull-off interchangeable heads.

The Airforce guns had that feature all along.

Speed of the pellet is what were looking for. If you make the stem to large you are creating back pressure on the flow of air, reducing the speed at which it can flow. I believe (could be wrong) that the stem should be no larger than the size of the breech opening, which should be no larger than the outside of the barrel at the it slides on. Even that causes some back pressure due to the air having to constrict as it goes in the slightly smaller barrel opening. With our gun design that cant be helped.

Funnily enough, Pablo mentioned that. A bayonet-fitting. But I’m no longer having problems with the head, I’ve modded my rifle so that both the low-power and high-power heads are locked in place by the breech. Which means I could probably go back to varying the aperture instead of the collar as a means of producing different-powered heads, and thus have them fit anyone’s rifle instead of just mine (assuming all stock breeches/cocking-knobs are the same).

With turbo charged engines the bigger the plumbing and intercooler between the turbo and the cylinders.
The more air there is to compress before the cylinders feel the boost.
I.E., Turbo lag. But then more volume of air is available at that boost.

Hmmm, interesting, how that would equate to pellet pushing…. ❓

Do you want to hit the pellet with a short but fast air pulse (short sharp shot – Pink Floyd) or a slower
but building in volume and speed pulse – (same sized orifice) ???

Have you ever thought of turning a slot inside the stem and then turning a lip on your top hat? That way the top hat would click into the stem and hold secure

Always wonderd if the dead space between the tophat n pellet could be used to generate some kind of pulse as in a two stroke expansion pipe.
Expand the air and then bottle neck/compress it to a focus point just behind the pellet.
Am gunna try it soon on a little project av been on for a while to see how in pans out.
May have to make the breach a little longer tho’. Possibley 75- 100mm ?.

I think a real world test is the only way to get a viable number with that.

That does seem to make sense, doesn’t it. It would arrive at the pellet with greater residual pressure (more ‘explosive’ force). The question is, how much difference could a couple of centimeters at 10mm diameter make…
