Qusetions On Older Talon SS Maint. & Upgrade
I got an older Talon SS series B with a DOT tank date of 06-99′. I would like to get the tank tested and convert the frame for spin lock tank use. AirForce lists two businesses that tests tanks on the west coast and I live on the east coast of the US. Are there more people that can test these tanks like at scuba shops or is this a very specilized testing. Also is it likely that at the age of my tank it would not pass the testing. If not would it be better to just invest in a new tank. Next I believe I read that Airforce can convert my rifle frame for Spin Loc use. Who has had this done and what did it cost. What was the turn around on getting your rifle back to you. Final question if I upgrade my tank to a Spin-Loc tank standard tank would I need to upgrade springs or parts for it to work. I would like to have the rifle gone over cleaned and lubed. It appears from watching videos and comparing my rifle to newer ones it might not be as user friendly to doing maintenance myself. Thanks ldp for the reply and information. I did not know that the Spin-loc retrofit was a user install item. I know one thing, I email AF about this subject and other questions and have not had an reply. I can’t find the Spin-Loc retro kit on their website. I will try them on the phone. Oh I just remember is there not a set screw for the tank. Would I then have to drill and tape the frame for this feature too.
Dont pay for AF to switch it to spin lock ready. Just buy the parts and put them in its a simple job and takes a couple minutes. I think the cost for the parts from AF is $15. After you get it done it will work with the quick change tank and the spin loc.
Any Scuba shop that does hydro testing can have the tank tested if you wish. If you have an air supply, (Scuba, SCBA tank) you can simply fill and go. The tanks are just over the size that does not require testing, and there are many of these tanks out there that are quite old, and may have never been tested. Not saying you shouldn’t, always better safe than sorry, so unless the tank has physical damage I don’t see why it wouldn’t pass a hydro test. I have an older probably first generation gun, that the previous owner did have the tank tested just prior to me purchasing it. As far as the conversion to Spin Lock, I believe you can use the existing valve, and order the collar and tool from Air force. If you want the guage and fill nipple then you would also need to change the valve, so compare the cost of the parts for conversion, plus the cost of a hydro on your tank, and you may come out better by simply purchasing the tank, and collar/wrench to do the spin lock conversion. Don’t quote me on the Spin Lock stuff, I don’t own one, but search the forum, I believe Pandemic posted a complete write up, and it may have also had video with it.

I talked directly to the lady on the phone. She asked if I wanted to send my rifle to have it fit and I said no I have the ability to do it and she great I will send it to you and if you need help or decide you cant you can send it in later. Its very simple. The original quick change collar has two set screws to remove and then it should come out. The new spin lock collar has an arm that sits against the frame and sticks up onto the bottom of the rail and is sandwiched between the collar and frame. That arm keeps the collar from just falling out when you loosen the set screw if you drill and tap to use it. I never drilled and tapped mine for the set screw cause I found it not necessary in my case. I would just screw the collar on the tank and when I tightened it with the wrench it never moved. That was over a year ago and I gave it to my son as a gift and hes never had a single issue with it and uses the Co2 adapter as well. Its been awhile since I did it so I might have left something out but thats all I remember and it was super easy. If you want to drill and tap a hole for the set screw that would be very easy also.
