Rangefinder!!
Went to academy sports today in town to get a box of ammo for my .22lr. All was well and good, until I passed by the optics area. They never have anything real special, best they usually have is one vari-x-III. But the rangefinders caught my eye. I have always wanted them, just never wanted to pay the $400 for a good one. They had a leupold rx-III sitting there with a price tag of $399, and an employee passing buy asked if I had any questions. I asked him how far that one could reach out. He said he wasn’t sure, so we opened up the cabinet to look at the box. Well, only one box left, marked “display” and priced at …. $200!!!!!!!!!
So I brought it home. 🙂
It says it can range reflective targets out to 1200 yards, which is far enough. I took it out and played with it a bit, and it’s awesome. That target a ways out in the woods that you attempted to pace off (impossible while stepping over stuff) is now easy. It also can tell angles, so if you are at an extreme angle taking a shot, it tells you the line of sight distance, as well as the ballistic range (how much you should pretend it is, and aim like that).
So, if you don’t have one, go buy one. They are really cool, and useful. 😀
Oh, and they didn’t have ammo. 😛

Well I gotta say, I’m pretty happy with this thing!
Took it to the parking lot at school to try it out. It is almost instant for targets under 700 yards, and the reading just pops right up. I found a tree that was right at 900, and it was starting to have some trouble with that. It still did well though, giving a reading 3 or 4 out of 5 times. It was extremely consistent, giving the exact same reading every time. I even managed to find a long strip and ranged a compact car at 1163 yards! It was really pushing it there, only giving a reading 2 out of 5 times, but it still was working, so I’m pretty happy with that.
Don’t know how it will work in the field, but it could easily range anything within 800 yards, so I think it will do just fine. 😀 Most of what I will be using it for is target shooting though, so at farther ranges I will have big sheets of plywood and such, which should make it easy to range. This thing is so cool. 😎

How tings have changed.
However when you buy new technology it is always expensive.
When I bought mine, and I guess it was just shy of 17 years ago, Cabelas had it listed at $3200.00, a friend got a deal at $2500.00 for a Swavarski rangefinder for me. No menue, two buttons just point and shoot, one button is to find the que in the dark.
It replaced my bino’s I have only one eye that works due to a duty injury, so a mono rangefinder with superb optics works fine
And the optics are really wonderful and I have killed a ton of elk with it, probably 40 of the nearly 50, 732 yards for 2 of 3 shots on a coyote and made my longest shot with it, ranged property lines, fence lines and set up ranges.
Range a top of a large tree to get you longest distances.
It is heavy and it was expensive, but I wouldn’t trade the experience of using and owning it all that time for anything.

Haha, it does have that funky menu. 😀 I’ve been looking it up online, and that seems like what most people complain about. Doesn’t really bother me though. If I needed to switch between modes a lot I can see not liking it, but I don’t think I will need to change it from where it is now much, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem.
It says 1200 on the box. Couldn’t find anywhere farther than 500 today, but it was doing that fine. I’ll drive around a bit tomorrow and try to find somewhere that I can see a long ways. The box does say that it won’t do game animals much farther than 7 or 800 yards, so that could be true.
How much was the leica? The price tag was a big thing here. If I was going to have to pay $400 I probably would have shopped around a lot more, but for $200 it was a steal.
I’ll try it out at farther ranges tomorrow and see how it does. I’ll let ya know. 😀
Been there, done it. Couldn’t figure out how to make the damn thing work, returned it for a refund. I still have my trusty Leica. It’s the only one that I have used that actually does reach out to the end of my shooting capability (900 yds). Although the longest shot I’ve taken at live game is nearer 700. I don’t remember the rxIII’s max range, the box never tells the correct distance it’ll work up to. Try and range some average targets (i.e., not concrete water tanks or radar reflectors on airplanes) and see how far it really goes in the field. Maybe they’ve fixed it. Does it still have that funky menu that goes round and round??
