Rangefinders
I have a Nikon Riflehunter 550. I have noticed that it has been getting harder to range targets with it lately. Today, it wouldn’t range a tree trunk that was past 115 yards.
I put a new battery in it a couple of weeks ago.
I guess it is time for a new rangefinder. I want one that has the angle feature. I shoot a lot of ground squirrels and have a hard time rengeing them over 50 yards, on flat ground. Will the rangefinders that are rated for 1000 yards give a better return, on flat ground, out to 120 yards?
I would like to hear people’s thoughts on this and also would like some recommendations on what to buy. I would like to stay under $400.00 or so.

X2 These things are far and away the best rangefinders out there. I’ve seen several humid or foggy days that other rangefinders would not work, even on close targets, but the Leica had no trouble. Also it goes without saying that the optics are the best on the planet.
a message in that link to http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=184820 mentioned an itunes app for range finding which made me think, they’re using google maps.
so, i went to google maps, plugged in my address, maxed the zoom and ranged all the landmarks around my property. it worked great. i took some tape-measure checks and found map-estimates within 5% of actually tape measures.
that’s not going to help anyone in the field. but for all you balcony/window shooters pest-protecting your property, that might be helpful.
Be a little patient and look on ebay lots. You can get the Leica LRF’s (900 1200) or the golf versions of that type quite cheaply. It’s one of the best I’ve used. And even beats my Geovid HD in ranging capability.

I have the Leupold RX-1000 TBR. It is $399 but it goes on sale at Cabelas and other places for $360. It has a bright orange reticle and I really like it. It has modes for archery vs HP rifle, etc and you can turn the angle calc off.
Long story short…. I had originally purchased a Wildgame Inovations HALO 6×24 at Academy Sports. Took it out of the package and noticed some sort of debris in the field of view. 🙁 Quality control at it’s best. 😡 Took it back. The salesman and I got to talking high performance air rifles. He a couple of PCP’s so he understood my needs. He recommended their Bushnell sport 600 which was an in-store-special (not offered on line), normally $179.99.. $99 bucks. 😀 I think I go back and buy the four they have left and put them on Amazon! 😉

i’ve got an elcheapo simmons, the one in the blister pack, checked it against a high end bushnell and it’s spot on.
I have a cheap NC star range finder and it works fine.. granted I have only used it under 300 yards and it was accurate at those ranges.. good piece of equipment to have.

My shooting buddy has one, and it is a very fine product indeed. I’ve been using a Nikon Prostaff 440 for the last six years, or so, and can not fault it. But the RX 1000 is leaps and bounds ahead of it.
