Q:

Red Ronin Tanto

Just finished up one of my Ronin Chisel ground blades. This one is in .190″ AEB-L 62HRC with liquid nitro cryo treatment.

Blade is 5.25″ and OAL 10.25″ with right hand chisel grind.

Handle is 3 strand tight bound cotton cord with red ito cord and the menuki is blue jigged bone all impregnated with epoxy.

Roger that!
Will start with new material!

What about a repurposed steel like 5160? Leaf spring steel turned into a machete? Doesn’t it require shaping and grinding and then heat treatment to harden it to a useable blade? Trying to learn a little not start a pissin’ match!

No, your fine. It is just most people are under the notion forging makes the steel better.

5160 is a great steel and easily can be forged. From a leaf spring it really is to thick for a matchete, for a chopper, Bowie or fighter that is a good choice.

For a matchete 1095, 01, A2 would be a better choice .100″ or so.

All steel needs to be heat treated , quench and tempered back in hardness.

Leaf springs can be used but are not ideal. They often have cracks due to stress that will not show up until it is time to use and they fracture upon use.

It is always better to start from clean steel from the start to avoid unknown history of a steel.

Adam? you just grinding these, correct? Not a forged blade?

Really like the results either way!

Forging is a good way to ruin good steel 🙂

Also this is stainless steel and that does not get forged.

What most people do not know is that the steel as it comes from the mill is as good as it will ever get. The maker can only ruin it, and forging while fun does nothing to make the steel better.

When you watch forged in fire you can see beautiful blade fracture due to the problems that can creep in due to forging.
