Q:

Regulated .30

I have had a TJ’s .30 cal pellet barrel for awhile. I even sent it to get coated last time I had stuff done. I used a one piece bushing I made for .308 barrel and all I had to do is open it up .003″ for this barrel. I also have a 100 gr hammer from a .257 build where I was taking off 5 grams at a time for testing.

I decided to throw it in my first .308 frame that I ended up replacing so I could make it a side cocker. This frame has been a test piece for anything I don’t won’t to do on a good frame. I was the first frame I had striped to make sure they did it right. I also used it to convert a old collared frame to the new drop in spin lock. I chucked it up in my lathe in the 4 jaw chuck and bored in the recess. I will do my .25 and .257 when I brake them down for anodizing here some day.

Next experiment will be to remove all but .375″ of the scope rail and install a .750″ wide solid one. It will be slotted to fit over what’s left and also will run a 1.250″ ball end mill down it. It will fit on top of the frame perfect and cover the old slot. Then it will be converted to side cooker and both sides caped like I have done in the past.

So to test it threw it all together with a old .257 breech and used my .25 reg tank. I just removed the stem and put in a stem with a .375″ tophat to match the breech. My .25 tank is set at 1800 psi and shoots JSB’s in the mid 930’s for 100 shots.

So I put the stem in with no spacer and it had a gap of .215″. I figure I was going to need everything I had so I shot it. Well I was a little surprised when it was shooting 44 gr at 865 for and real consistent.

So I decided to drop in a spacer just for kicks to see what happens. The biggest spacer I had was .110″. So I topped off to 3000 psi and started shooting. I was really surprised when now it is shooting around 915 fps.
So now it’s running .105″ TH. So I dig through my spacers and stack 2 to come up with a .085″ TH gap. Now it is shooting around 905 fps with dips into 898 fps. These pellets are not very consistent and can vary 2 gr.

So now I fill up and do a shot string to see how many it will get. On shot 51 it came off the reg with a 888 fps shot and shot 50 was 900 fps. So I was thrilled but I think there is more in it if I make the reg chamber larger. I would like 60-70 shots around 880-890 fps.

These pellets don’t do good over 900 fps. I have a friend that converted his .22 evanix to .30 and he is shooting it at 875 fps and gets sub MOA at 100 yards with 44 gr. JSB’s and 70 gr custom boattail slugs.

So as time permits I will work on this and a .357 version also. Need to have options for EBR and maybe the .357 will be to my advantage.

Breech is machined down to .373″-.374″ for a length of 2.6″. I use a 012 o ring on the hammer side and a 110 on the top hat. Both are 90d urethane. You can use 012 on both sides but I like to use the .103″ o rings

The 110 o rings in that material I have yet to find unless you go to a manufacturer and buy 100 min.

Have you looked at The o-ring store.com?

Very nice work, I’m always blown away by the master pieces you turn out.

Oh yes, please do!! Doug! I formally request you allow Ced to video this rifle! Now if only we could get some consistent pellets!!

Yes she is Caboose. I got a chance to hold her frame before it was all assembled and then just recently when I went to Dougs like it is in the pics. Doug ran her over the Chrony for me and its not too bad sounding. So when he puts a shroud on it, she is gonna be whisper quiet.

Its fucking SOLIDLY built and Doug would have to stand on it for it to flex. :8:

She should be a performer on paper for sure………………………

Hopefully, Doug lets me take it out for a little video and testing session.

ABSOLUTELY Gorgeous!! 😈

That’s awesome Doug!!! :8:

Great stuff Doug, can’t wait either :biggrinn:

I took it out today and finally got to shoot at something instead of my mulch box.

I am more than happy with it. I sighted it in for around 60 yds. I didn’t have my range finder so I was going off of what I remember from going there before. Not a place to shoot paper but pieces of clay pigeons and small rocks were easy. Once I figured out the drop I could hit pieces at 100 yds.

I lost track of the shot count but it is got to be between 60-70 shots now. It is shooting from 890-905 fps.

I can’t wait to do the same with .357.

So no taper, just a straight edge? Actually, when I get around to it, I’ll probably be sending you a PM to schedule some time to make a breech, and machine the frame for side-cocking, and a bolt handle… I was just looking for the breech end barrel specs so I can have the barrel ready to drop in for you. Thanks again Doug! :8:

On my .257 I’m running 110’s on both sides but I’m not sure where I got the o rings from. I know they are 90d.

I’m having trouble with the fit of the 110 90d o rings that I got from a manufacturer. They are on the smaller side of the spec sheet. To get them to work on the hammer side I would have to take the barrel down to .365″ to make it a loose enough fit. It’s not a big deal to take the barrel down to .365″. I’m just trying to keep things the same with what I build.

You can get the 012 from McMaster Carr. They are under urethane and then under hard. I think they are $14.25 for 25. The 110 o rings in that material I have yet to find unless you go to a manufacturer and buy 100 min.

Doug- by chance, could you PM or post the machine specs for your .30 barrel? i.e. the breech area- what the O.D. is, for what length, if you tapered it, what taper… Thanks!

That’s alright… Nothing a little attention to detail can’t fix. I have no life- just building and shooting! As far as the ano, I’m completely okay with Cerakote, so no worries there… Sweet. At least you’re not opposed to the idea, otherwise I wouldn’t do it. I mean, this mod is originally your idea after all… You are pretty much the expert!! Say Doug, could you PM me (if you’re not comfortable putting it on open forum) for a ballpark price on one of your bolt handles?
This one specifically (I hope it’s okay to use your pic):

I love the way it looks…

I’m sure you can glue it on. I just like to anodize everything so it has to be screwed on. Biggest problem with 90 min flash is keeping it from moving and the glue oozing where you don’t want it.
