Q:

Remove metal finish

Can you guys give some advice? I have the S&W 686 co2 pistol from Umarex. It’s really a nice gun that is very accurate for an action pistol, but the pellet magazines only come in a black finish. This doesn’t match the “silver/stainless” finish of the rest of the gun. I’d like to try and make one match better, either by painting the sides silver (could be messy and there are flutes and alignment notches to contend with), or removing the black finish down the the bare alloy (no idea of the best way to do this…fine sand paper?). Any thoughts? Or if someone would be willing to polish it out with the proper equipment for a small fee that would be cool too.

Naw only the deer testicles that one time. 😆

Spray on oven cleaner in a glass baking dish

have a Big pot of water set to the side

Spray on oven cleaner and monitor closely

Dunk in water to stop action.

Do frequently checking that only the anodizing gets removed.

Once removed soak in water and clean completley.

If you live it in the oven cleaner to long it will eat the aluminum.

quote nutshot:

Add water to the caustic (don`t add caustic to water or it can boil and spit ) and make a just milky colour solution

You got the Add backwards.

It’s the water that reacts, so you add the caustic agent to a large quantity of water so it absorbs the heat rather than boiling off like a few drops/small stream would if you started pouring water into the agent.

Caustic soda (drain cleaner) is what I use to remove anodizing . Add water to the caustic (don`t add caustic to water or it can boil and spit ) and make a just milky colour solution . Drop the parts in and the anodizing will go pretty quickly . Keep a good eye on it as if you leave it in too long the caustic will eat your part .

a client of mine, stripped down her door hinges with a crock pot, and some kind of cleaner, gonna have to find out what it was.
slow cooked those hinges squeaky clean

I found a little trick, Grease Lightning cleaner removes the finish of anodized metal, you can get it at Home Depot. found it out by accident 😕

Ok Roach I’ve been rubbing it against my chin for the last hour. Damn mag is still black as ever and my chin is red. Maybe I’m supposed to put the acid on my face first?

Yeah I had a real 686 years ago but sold it when hi-cap autos became all the rage…dumbass that I was. Wish I still had it. This umarex pistol is nothing like any of the all plastic co2s that are out there. The weight and balance are identical to the real thing. High quality construction and very accurate at 10yds….plus I can shoot it in the basement, lol.

If those are actually metal and there’s no plastic or o-rings in them, you might try a watered down muratic acid solution. I would have it attached to a wire for removal and OF COURSE WEAR EYE PROTECTION and gloves.

Take it slow, see what 20-30 seconds does and go from there. A toothbrush can help remove finish from the crannies. A Dremel tool will aid in polishing the metal to a shine.

You could also try electroplating it yourself. A battery, sacrificial anode, and solution. Google it.

I find I can remove almost any metal finish, but have to be careful not go overboard and damage the metal.

What I do is rub it very lightly against my chin with a day old beard.

Seriously how are you liking that 686 besides the finish, do you have the firearm also?

Seems like it wuld be a great gun for slugs around here.

Regards,
