Q:

Restrictive Valve Spring Retainer from Tony

So many of you know that I have been on a bit of a quest for efficiency on my TalonSS and have been trying to get a good number of shots at a lower velocity for a while now…. this a .177 Talon…..

I had my gun out on loan for an extended period and got it back, posted some pics a while back… and just this past weekend got down to some serious testing.

I was first going for accuracy and then shot count. I have an 18 inch barrel and the restrictive valve spring retainer from Tony on this gun. I do not have an ETaC on this one as I do my others so I cannot view fill pressure as I shoot.

I started messing with the tophat and preload and ended up getting the velocity I wanted and went on to accuracy.

Accuracy using JSB’s and CPL’s were DISMAL. 40 yard groups were around 2 inches.

I tried FTS, RWS… same or worse. I even tried ….Gamo… and got nothing good. (no surprise there)

I ended up trying some Kodiaks and groups went where they should. 5 shots covered by a dime at 40 yards was the norm. I then adjusted the preload a little more to compensate for the lower velocity and the end result after a quick top off to do shot count testing…

Accuracy was still great. I am getting a starting velocity of around 680fps on a 2950psi fill . I counted out 100 pellets and just shot targets and plinked for a while.

After around 50 shots, I chronied…. running around 700fps… great!

Finished up the pellets and chronied. 685fps therabouts. Went to charge the gun and I was just a RCH under 2700psi remaining.

I’m thinking I can live with this! 😀

hi so it would seem you have your gun running like ours over here in the uk?????well as there are supposed to run

Exactly. Seems many of yall want more power and here I am trying to get less power for more shots… 😎

Nope… not bent at all. Could be the grass or flash, but those are BKL’s and they certainly are not bent… 🙂

To the Naked Eye, the scope rings on the gun in the middle appear to be bent to me 😕

Bit of confusion, sorry.

I had gotten the restrictive valve spring retainer a while back from Tony. I hadnt messed around with it too much other than to install and shoot… and I got good results, but nothing like this.

I then loaned out my gun for a loooong while and recently got it back. ….and thats when I took the pics. After getting my AF herd together…

So for anyone who missed the pics, here they are with the post….

I just was really pleased with the results on the restrictive spring retainer and thought I’d expound on it a little more, hence this current post.

….prior post made about 3 weeks ago…

Have had one of the Talons on loan as well as my .25 barrel….

Got everything back and tweaked the way I want them.

Starting from the top….

Condor with Tony tune… Fabio grips and Bodis forearm, WokButt, Tony breech knob, .25 barrel from Tony, and ETaC. Got it runnint around 75fpe for around 20 shots using 42gr Eun Jins.

Next up is a Talon with Misc parts from a Wokbutt, Tony restrictive valve spring retainer, Rabbits stock, TimW frame extension, 18 inch .177 barrel. Running around 720fps with 7.9gr pellets for a bazillion shots.

Last is a Talon with 12 inch .22 barrel, Fabio grips and Bodis forearm, ETaC reg set at 850psi, YN fishbone frame insert, and WokButt strap on… running around 16fpe for tons and tons of shots.

Got enough guns so that I dont need all of them to be hammers and I’m happy with the shot count and output of these. I think I’ll leave them be for a while like this.

Rob did you ever post pictures of that?

That was over a year ago, I cant find the thread. Considering something like that for the .20 barrel for when I shoot hornets and yard golf.

Way to go Rob ❗

A whole lot of fun and real easy on the budget ❗

Thanks Rob…
Damn…that was a while ago, huh buddy??

you are not mistaken. I was really amazed at it myself.

I’ve heard of Talons coming out of the box really efficient in .177 but have never been lucky enough to get one.

The restrictive retainer from Tony was key on this one though.

so a 100 shots and a drop in fill pressure of 200 psi or am i mistaken ?
a 100 shots/fill would make me take a long hard look at a talon again.
