——————————————————————————–

RC just called me a while ago, with some interesting tid bits. We had a bad connection, as he was up in the mountains doing a little shooting, so I will post what I can.

He will be along in a couple of days to give details.

I understand he has pic’s that should be a lot of fun!

Here is what I know at the moment.

I assume this is with the Hayley, .257. Again, I couldn’t hear him well.

4 rounds shot at 500 yard hitting Coke cans, followed by 1 shot at 550 yards again hitting a Coke Can.

These were the NOE bullets, cast by URS, and launched from a 1-10 twist TJ barrel.
The bullets were cast from 20-1 lead, and the shooting was done at a 5700ft elevation, and being pushed by a 3500 psi fill.

Woo-Hoo!!! I should have a .257 Barrel, valve, hammer, and bushings here before long from Dyotat. both URS, and OldGoat have cast some bullets for me to try in it before acquiring my own molds. This should be an interesting adventure!

I’m looking forward to the Pic’s when UnrepentedSinner returns from his Shooting Trip to the Mountains. What a life!

Tof. should get a kick out of this!

Poor cans..i feel sorry about em.
Rc..did you shoot the teapot too?..

Anyway…Patiently waiting for your video.

Cheers

I have posted about the 500, 550 and suspected 608 yard hits on the Yellow and Adventurers forum.

Saturday the BestBuy GeekSquad is coming to teach my “computer video challenged ass” how to transfer the video my wife made of the hits from the Handycam to the computer and how to edit the video for posting on forums.

view of the target butt on the mine tailing at 608 yards, it is the white oblong spot just under the skyline.

Victims of the Haley can opener note the bullet placement on the three 500 yard cans on the right.

Cast Bullet roundness can’t cured from a die and usually this happen due to pins misalignment of the mold.
Its impossible for a mold to not misalign even if you have the impression that both the mold blocks sit firmly and opposite to eachother…we are talking for .001″ to.003″ of loose.
This tolerance broaden along bullets horizon and make it not perfectly round.

Now,when attempt to size the bullet during the entrance into the die ,it attachs to the “step” points so the most of the material removal will be here.
If the bullet measures .005 more than dies ID,a perfect roundness is possible to accomplish, but there is no manufacturers who use that kind of tolerance at their molds in our days.
The meaning of bullet sizing is to keep the same pressure along the internal surface of barrel in order to make bullet keep align perfectly after it leaves the barrel crown.
Barrels size the bullets but the removing material can’t find recourse and that tolerance affect to a specific points remaining against to the barrels wall.
NOE’s .257 bullets are tight enough and thats the reason they performed even better than other designs..and mostly you can shoot them effectively even unsized!!

Off course the Key when size your bullets,is to size them without bending them, bumping the nose, or shaving one side, and then fit them to the gun so that they start straight in the bore.
Don’t “wad up” them into the die under a sloppy fit and try to keep a gentle pressure curve until the bullet exit from the die.

Thanks for sending me the link for the sizer Tof!

I have been trying to figure out what to do. I can’t seem to find my rcbs press since we moved out here. Hope it wasn’t lost.

Trying to figure the cheapest way to go. furnace, die, mould. I’ll get it figured out eventually!

Doug,

I’ve noticed that same thing over the years about bullets coming out of the mold NOT TRULY ROUND then when you size them, they are still not TRUE.
***Simply measure any SIZED cast bullets diameter with calipers and spin it around while doing so and one will note the very different measurements***

His barrel is a TJ’s .257. There is no choke. It measures .25665″ if I remember right.

I have open up the sizing die with a stone file on the lathe. I have also figured out his to make them I think better then the lee ones.

The lee sizer just sizes sizes the bullet down what ever the size is. Mine sizes it down and seem to make the bullet almost perfectly round. II have noticed that if your bullet is not perfectly round ( almost all) after it comes out of the mold the sizers don’t fix it and just sizes the bullet it the shape it is. Yes it gets closer to round but not as owe as you would think.

Contact to Rick Tunell aka Buckshot’s at castboolits forum (tunell@verizon.net.)
Hes job is top notch ,comparable with Lee at very reasonable prices.
A sized slug sent as a proof once you receive your die.
This Guy rocks and make whatever type of bullet sizing die you want.
The link i gave to my previous post was for those that want a die without waiting for a long time.

quote Tofazfou:

My groove diameter is about .25650″ or there abouts (as slugged).

Tofazfou,Is this with a bullet slugged all the way(passed the choke too) or nearest to the breech side?

Hey Charlie, that is an idea!

I have .250 thru 257 Lee dies and I could have one of them opened up to 258 in the tool and die shop at work.

They could open it up, lap and polish it, and do at least as good a job as Lee does. I am going to take my .250” die into work tomorrow and see what they think.

Thanks!

I enjoyed your post on the Yellow and I also enjoyed giving you some shit!

Hope I didn’t get banned for it! 😆

Have you tried to open one up?

I sent a 257 to Joe that I had worked over with a dremel and opened up, or at least with my primitive measuring devices it seemed to be opened up.

RC

When I get into something, I tend to go hog shit crazy with it. I have at least 20 Lee sizing dies but, I don’t have a .258” die. I really thought that I had everything covered in 22, 243 and 25.

Lee won’t take my order for a .258 until July.

Does anybody have one that they would sell for a profit?

Please?

Awesome news.

KillerQueen, my sizing die is rated .258″ and it sizes bullets right at about .25775″ which is not uncommon. So its just about on the money for .258″. My groove diameter is about .25650″ or there abouts (as slugged).

Mike as you know ,lee stopped occasionally to support their customs products and i dump if they will accept orders at summer as they said.
So, there is a guy who sell some sizing dies of them and i recommend you to purchase one right now they are still available few of them.
Very usefull when finally you ll get your mold.
To be honest Im not sure if Rc’s and Tof’s dies are rated .208 or .207 but i think thatone can do the job.

OOp’s! 😳
