Rule of Thumb for Tophat setting?
I’ve read somewhere around here about different tophat settings but I’ve got a question or ten.
A decrease in tophat setting results in less air allowed to escape when the hammer strikes the tophat, correct?
Just got my son’s Talon SS .177 in and was fiddling around with it last night. It was shooting pretty hard so I turned the power wheel down but it didn’t have a big effect. So I set the tophat to .070″. Now it’s running heavies in the mid 800’s.
So I guess my question concerns the relationship between the tophat setting and the power wheel. Should I set the powerwheel low, med or high and adjust the tophat for a good shot curve? Or should I use an established setting and tune with the powerwheel? Should I look at the tophat setting as a coarse setting and the powerwheel as a finer adjustment? Or vice versa?
I’m thinking I should be able to get 35-40 consistent shots out of the rifle.
All advice is welcome.

My understanding is tophat for coarse settings and power wheel for fine tune.
The spring loaded hammer kinda controls how long the valve stays open letting more/less air out quicker or slower depending on application.

run the pre load wheel somewere in the middle then shoot over a crony wile playing with the tophat, get it were your seeing the best speeds without an increase with more tophat. set it , then play with the pre load to get it constant.
