scope mounting questions lets discuss some scope heights!!!
what would be an optimal height in which to mount the scope? i know, i know, “as close to the frame as the objective bell will allow”. but at what height do we start looking at adjusting the angle of the scope’s base (not the rings)? or because of the ranges most .25 cal and below airguns are shooting, the angle of the scope base (to “give” or “free up” more vertical adjustment) become moot? im building a custom rifle, and (im hoping, i dunno yet) i know that the base is going to be lower, or the same height as the edge scope rail. i dont want to go higher than 50mm on the objective, but right now im looking at 36-46mm objective bells. im wanting to do long range work, with surefire 7 ring slugs, .25 cal. im worried that i wont have enough elevation adjustment. thoughts? or am i looking too much into this and applying too much real steel experience? thanks again guys! love this forum!!

BSA were bought by Gamo, thats why a lot of the BSA stuff went to shit, the R10 being a prime example. Though the new R10s coming out now are FUCKING OUTSTANDING!!!! 😎 😎
i dont know if BSA sold to china, but from a reliable source they are no longer selling barrels to ANYONE. theyre just making barrels for their own stuff… doom on them, they’d make more money selling their barrels, then the crap their putting out now, or so ive heard- the QC isnt up to par, and they’re also rebadging at least one their rifles as GAMO’s… or GAMO’s making a really freakin awesome clone (externally at least).
Yes, I am hoping to see some numbers on Walts valve with the 7 rings. I have a modded valve from Tony, but the 7 rings are still too “loopy” despite making 100 fpe. I would love to push them at least 100 fps faster than my rifle can now.
What is this about BSA not selling??? I hear all kinds of Rumors…is it fact or fiction that BSA is no more and has sold to the Chinese???
lol, im not sure yet… but walts got some nice numbers shooting the surefire slugs- i think he mods your condo valve, not so much making a completely new valve… and theres a guy in the UK that makes them- not blod, oh poop… i know he does alot with BSA barrels. well did, as BSA isnt selling to anyone anymore. 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡

oh, by no means was i going to make a snap descision on the scope guys, believe me, ive put thought into it…(maybe too much) i meant to say i was THINKING of getting a SWFA scope. i was thinking of 10x because it makes using mils for ranging on the fly easier to calculate. im doing paper punching, for practice, and to learn about and tune my gun, but im focused around hunting mid-sized game (coons, wood chucks, and ummm, feral things) at 70+ yards. okay, i lied, 100+ 😆 ive been looking at leupy’s, ive been looking at hawkes, Nikons, and things of that nature…i DID look at the S&B till i saw the sticker price- 3100 bucks, are you fisting me?! screw that! thats going to be the same price if not a bit more than my rifle! and ive heard that it has probs in the cold…screw that! im kinda picky…i wish there were a place that did custom quality scopes…but if there were, it would be WAAAAY out of my price range…personally 3-5k for a scope is rediculous, unless it was like an MST100 or a S&B USMC sniper scope. another reason for the 10×42 is because the Marines used to shoot a 10x Unertl (MST 100 now) with great accuracy at 800+ yards…

Don’t go with the 10 power scope! If you’re going to try for precision you’re going to want more power. Yes, you CAN shoot very well with lower power but if you are bench resting, you can shoot BETTER with higher power at long range (airgun long range, no need to remind me of mirage etc.).
What is your budget for the scope and mount/rings? There are a lot of variables to consider but you have to start with the budget or this will end up with you “needing” a S&B or Hendsolt!
There are a lot of great scopes out there and depending on how you will use them, you don’t have to get the most expensive. You will have to do some research and make some decisions though.
Have you got $900 for the optics? For that green, you could put on a nice ziess scope and also mount it in barrett rings that allow 15 or 40 MOA droop (I’ve got a set of Barrett rings and they are great). The rings allow you to compensate for the relatively small elevation range of the Zeiss scopes.
For about the same coin (a little less, I guess), you could go with a 6500 series scope that has more elevation adjustment and standard rings.
For a little more you could get a 10-50X scope and the Barret rings…
Only have $500? OK, the glass is going to go down a step but still in the plenty good for most situations range. Maybe you go for a 4200 series scope and ask MAC1 for a quote on honing a set of 20MOA canted rings?
Trust me, with the coin you’re putting into the gun, you don’t want a crap scope combination! Which way does the range you usually shoot at face? West? You REALLY don’t want POS glass unless you like shooting into milk! Do all your shooting at 100+ yards? You REALLY don’t want to have to use a MILDOT if you’re going for groups. Shoot paper but also carry the gun for hunting? You REALLY don’t want 14 pounds of glass!
Don’t spend all your time and money and thought on the gun and make a snap decision on the scope!
thanks to all! and i wasnt afraid of putting the idea out there, i was just hoping i wouldnt get made fun of too much for overthinking of the scope set up. im going with a SWFA 10×42 w/side paralax. how are we to learn if we dont ask, right? all great answers! im setting up my custom rifle to shoot surefire 7 rings exclusively. so of course, im going with a modded valve, heavy hammer and spring to match…i love long range! its fun, but mostly the technical stuff… again, thanks to all!!! i was thinking about angling the scope base because i know of some sniper rifles that have 20-30 mils of angle on the base…of course, we’re all not shooting out to 1500 meters, so really, it’s not needed. me over-thinking things again!

While like 80 Grit says, we are using football tragectory projectiles, and there is not much range, there are things we can do on a speciality rifle used only for long distance, like 100 yards and beyond.
Chairgun shows that on a 10 power scope with mildots, and a 100 yard zero a 70 grain projectile at 870 is going to be into the 5th mildot, on my Baraska I only have 4 mildots so that is where the heavy part of the reticle takes over, at 146 yards. So after that you have no reference point to aim with.
This year doing predatory bird work, with a 60 yard zero, and a 18 grain Exact at around a 1000FPS, I was running out of mildots at the same range on 12 power and made my furtherest kill at 148 yards, which was where the duplex met the lower crosshair below the 4th mildot.
It would be nice, if we had reticles that did not use the duplex and there were more Mildots, so we could get further out there.
Your point about canted bases will not work because you only have so much room between the duplexes.
On my scope I have 4 mildots so that means I would have 11 points to aim at if I use both duplex intersections and of course the center, on CHairgun that 70 grain projectile at 870 sighted in on the top duplex, is going to make it to 190 yards before your into the heavy duplex at the bottom and loose your reference to aim with.
So with your canted base, your not going to get much further.
One solution is to use a lower power and increase the distance between mildots, I have done this within reason, but with small birds or mamals it get takes away the ability to hit further out anyway. If we use bigger targets, we can go further with lower power, just not a hunting tool then, and I am primarily a hunter.
BTW never be shy to hash this out, this is how new ideas are formed.

I don’t think that you need to get too “worked up” on worrying about enough elevation MOA as long range in air gunning is not really “long range” at all. I have not had a chance to really get into chairgun yet, and I will soon, but I find that using a mil dot scope on my airguns is beneficial in that you can easily assign specific dots to specific distances, therby avoiding comeups on your dial. I never liked the 50 mm bells for aesthetic reasons and if a good 40 mm glass can gather light better than a cheap 50mm, thats even better.
